Heard a story on a Loading Dock few days ago...
A guy(Owner Operator) was at the truck stop in Houston, TX for 3 days waiting for a load. On his third day, he was approached by a few people offering him a load out of TX for $.67 per mile. He told them to #### off.
If someone came to you, giving you a load for 67 cents a mile to Dallas, Laredo or McAllen, what would you do????
Take it, or deadhead for free???
I went empty, to Laredo, TX....(cant run interstate, small thing called Cabotage Law)
So, for my US Owner Operator friends.....
Would you take 67 cents per mile???
Would you go empty 450 miles???
Would you just sit and wait in Houston, TX???
Would you say NO to cheap labour, or, would you suck up your pride and take cheap freight ???
What woud YOU do ?????

Reason I am asking, is that I spoke to a OO from Colorado who was all about "Say no to cheap freight".....
Until he was sitting there for 3 days. He took $.67....to Edinburg, TXLast edited: Feb 17, 2009

Well I think this all depends on a few things....
1) Will I be able to get better freight at my new destination?
2) How big/heavy is the load?
3) Will I be able to find more freight to go to that same place to make a better paying LTL load?
These are just a few of the questions I'd have to ask myself. Now I am also one who normally says "NO" to cheap freight but if it was $0.67/mi to haul a shoebox size package and I could find some more reasonable paying freight to go along with it then I might do it. But my opinion doesn't matter too much anyway as like you I can not "Interstate". -
i would run mt on principal as long as guys take the cheap crap the rates will never come back up.
RickG and leannamarie Thank this. -
like was said. How much are you losing sitting there waiting when you could run the cheap freight to somewhere where the freight is better. pride don't feed your family.

Something similar just happened to my Brother in law. He took a load of cheese to lees port Pa. they offered him a load at .75cpm to get him out and back home. He told them to keep it and he would just dead head home. They asked him when he wanted to load out again and he told them if they could get something for a $1.30 pm he would take it. They asked what if we can't get anything for that, and he told them not to call until they did.
He's been sitting at home for 4 days so far. -
I would DH out. If I take it, then when one of you guys come through they will offer you the same rate or less.
If enough people say no, the rate will come up. Granted I am probably not going to change anything living my life this way but I for one will never be the one to fold. Pride is about all I have left and that can't be bought for .67 a mile. -
Ya know, I get tired of hearing that. "if enough people refuse to haul cheap freight then the rate will come up". If you don't take it then swift,jb hunt, warner, ect. will and you will be out of a job. So please don't take it. It leaves more frieght for them.

You have to know your operating costs... To turn down a unprofitable load isn't being stupid.. It's business. You have to stay profitable to survive. SO taking a load to apy the fuel isn't a good way to ensure a long and prosperous company.
Would I take a load paying .60 cpm... NOPE.. I would rather deadhead 600 miles and take a load that pays $2 a mi... why waste my time and wear and tear on my truck to make nothing but fuel $$, My truck gets better fuel economy empty..
If those mega carriers want to haul freight for .65cpm let them... They're not imune to bankrupcy. look at all the companies laying off and going out of business. Only the smart will survive.
Your the only one that can make the decisions, experiance and knowing where your going, and what to expect when you get there has to play a role in your business decisions.... Just because someone waves a carrot in your face and tells you the load pays $3 a mi going to Wyoming.. are you going to jump all over it?? Where are you going to reload.. realisticly.. most logicly for your type of trailer.. Salt Lake City?, Denver?, or all the way back to Kansas City?? Then you crunch the #'s and see if that $3 will pay enough for you to turn a profit.. IF YOU CAN... by all means take it.. If NOT.. why do it?
I refuse to haul cheap freight. That is not why I am in business.. So far I've done okay... I'm not hurting that much even with the economy the way it is... Not everyones situation is the same....... -
Do you really think Swift, JB Hunt, Werner ect... Haul freight for those lowball prices? If so, you don't understand the corporate mindset. They are in it for profit, period. In fact, the Big Guns are all jockeying for intermodal contracts via a network to minimize down time, for lack of 'profitable' backhaul freight.
If the Big Companies don't wanna haul freight for fuel, why should you want to do it? It may require savvy planning as Gonzo pointed out.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 20, 2009
