Hi everyone,
I am a middle-aged female who wants to be a truck driver. I have two brothers who have been drivers: one says I would love it, the other is adamant that it is NOT the job for me.
I have been lurking around the forums here for a while but the information and opinions are very inconsistent. So how do I get the real lowdown on if this job would work for me? Are there any female drivers out there who can give me a realistic idea?

I'm not a female, but you'll love trucking.
Jim Palmer Trucking in Missoula, Montana has their own cdl school and the pay is good there.
Jim Palmer runs 48 states.

I am a long time female driver. Let me ask you a few questions: Why does trucking appeal to you? What kind of trucking do you think you would like to do: Local, OTR, LTL, Van, reefer, tanker, flatbed, etc? Trucking isn't for everyone. Some will never leave it.

I’ll tell you a secret half the male drivers love it and half hate it .. many women like the job .. if you go into it knowing it’s just a job not a vacation most do well

I don't mind that a job that is grueling or sometimes physical. In fact, I enjoy a bit of that. My ex-husband and I owned a small construction business and I have recently remodeled a house pretty much on my own (ran out of money for contractors!) I am used to some physical labor and also dealing with chauvinistic men.
This is something I have thought about since I was a youngun. Had an uncle who used to let me ride in his truck and it was from that point that it has always been on my mind. My kids are all out of the house now and I am recently divorced. I feel like it is now or never.
While I am very determined, I am also a realist. How long have you been driving? Would you choose the same career if you had it to do over again?Midwest Trucker, MagnumaMoose and d o g Thank this. -

I've been driving full time since 1992. I would choose the same career if I had to do it over again, though I may have stayed away from a few companies knowing what I know now. Sounds like you may really enjoy trucking. I take it you don't have your CDL yet. If not, there are a lot of great resources to help you get your CDL. Where are you located?
