Recently hauled this load of coils. I don’t run coils often, another guy loaded the same next to me and put 2 5/16s chains on each and rolled out. Blankets are there to protect my tarps. Strap to hold the blankets while trapping. And 3 3/8s chains. Every time I pull up to load or unload Iv always got way more straps or chains on the load then anyone else. Just hauled 4 10,000 lbs 50 foot pipes I used 4 belly’s and 6 over the top. Guy next to me used 5 straps total. These loads were from OH to OR and OR to CO. Not short hauls. Is it overkill on my part or are people just getting lazy.

People are getting lazy. I usually over chain everything I do.

    Overkill...maybe.

But did you have to worry about the load at all while driving?

No I didn’t. Even had what I would consider a hard braking instance being cut off and I wasn’t worried about the load shifting on me. Although at the next rest area I pulled out and rechecked everything. Nothing budged.

That is pretty well the way I would have loaded that load with one exception, you should keep your coil bunks inside the coils width to ease the strain on the lumber.

I use 3/8 chain also and would have done the coils the same way. How much extra time does adding one additional chain really take? Peace of mind when your driving for sure.

  8. Always throw more chain than you need especially the front coil. You always worry about your coil loads.

No such thing as overkill especially with coils.
