MO problems and potentially shorter service life.
Gears are all that matters. Back in the 70s log truck guys in Michigan thought 300hp was great hauling 160,000 gross. -
Yep its all in the gearing I pulled around frac pumps @ 100k with 425/1650 isx w/4.88 rears. Pulled like a bear
Edit: the food service company I worked for had 505hp dd15 with direct 2.64 and they felt dead compared to the trucks with super low gearsDino soar, sangtito and Oldironfan Thank this. -
Agreed. Don’t just buy a truck. Buy the right truck to do the job you need it to do. Power is just 1 portion of the equation. If you’re running regional in flatlander territory 90% of the time, big power is a waste. If you’re in the metro NYC area the transmission and wheelbase are more important.
Go learn what you need in someone else truck, the freight lane, the equipment needed to do the best job. Not what you want to hear...but if you’ve never worked in a restaurant, how do you expect to be successful just because you can buy a restaurant?sangtito and Oldironfan Thank this. -
when you do eventually go O/O with horses for courses if your running alot of mountainous terrain with loads 70,000 lb + , 500 horses will give that giddy up you'll need if your mainly running in the mid west open plains just a couple hills 450 hp will be sufficient.sangtito, 86scotty and Oldironfan Thank this.

I used to run 126,000lb gross and pulled it with a 290. 450hp is lots of power for 80,000lb.adayrider, Brettj3876 and sangtito Thank this.

I do appreciate for everybody’s answers and I also feel that too. And this answer is the one that I really need it. Base on the bigger the engine the more fuel it burns per mile, so why not having the “regular” size engine that will do the job.
Like everybody is saying that pb 389 is the one to go and I can afford it. It’s just, with my minimum knowledge, that if I really need that size of a truck. -
Thank you for all the responses. I’m very new but I also feel very old dealing with all the fms and the forced dispatch bs. Thinking about having my own business and with my limited knowledge I know I need a lot of helps.
One of them is which truck should I get to start with. -
montrose818, sangtito and Oldironfan Thank this.

After some consideration.... Undeleted:
A truck needs big horsepower to be a real truck.... like a man needs big nuts to be a real man.Last edited: Sep 20, 2018
