Amazing. Now, they’re doing Man Cave Porn!
Years ago, before the mega carriers became mega, we used to work at trucking companies that was basically a big open yard, a double wide trailer for an office and a barn for a shop. On Friday, when the long haulers made it back in, we would hang out in the shop. The owner would have the keg set up, and we would all sit there and drink beer with the owner.
Someone will read that and say, “How scary! A company owner encouraging truck drivers to drink and drive? I sure am glad that doesn’t go on anymore.”
Yeah, you work for a company where all your office people hide behind plexiglass and treat you like children. We were treated as adults, and were responsible for ourselves. Some of you guys would flip out if you heard that it was not unusual back in the day would sit in a truck stop diner and have a beer for lunch.
“But Six, that’s not safe. Today, things are much safer.”
20 years ago, I didn’t have to sit and wait in my truck for a truck to park on either side of me before I could go in and eat. I’ve been hit TWICE in the last 10 years. And that was in the parking spots where you could back straight in. Something that didn’t used to happen now happens all the time. Tell me about safety when you see idiots rolling through parking lots in the 7th gear.
Yeah, it was safer with a bunch of gun toting, beer drinking truckers than all of these fat, effeminate, smelly self centered sidewalk sissies that call themselves drivers. All the stuff you guys complain about...the piss jugs on the fuel islands, the crappy attitudes, the self centered slow moving idiot riding in the middle lane that refuses to share the roads...this was not the way 30 years ago. Don’t tell me about safety, and you are the one who refuses to shower or wash your hands before you eat at the buffet.
“You’re ranting again Six. All that from a picture of an old fridge...”
Yeah...sorry. Six back quiet.
Where is everyone #5

Okay, wannabe owner operators, in this picture is what you see on the inside of an owner op spec’d truck. Far right, you see axle temp gauges. Your truck probably doesn’t have those. Engine oil temp, transmission temp, drive axle gauges...if you’re loaded pretty heavy and gotta do some hill climbing, you want those gauges. Especially if you got a big motor under the hood. You can cook your drivetrain in the summer if you push too hard (ever see all those dead trucks on the shoulder in the hill country?), and so, if you are looking for a truck with performance, make absolutely sure that she has the full gauge package.

Yeah theres a big difference today. Then you had "Truckers " now you have "drivers".
I HATE when one of those wheel holders addresses me as "driver" when hes trying to say something... -
I'm actually glad I came into trucking long after this was a thing.
-
They don't all work, but I got 'em!
Rear driver and trans temp never worked, and I'm still trying to get them to replace the pyro temp gauge, but I never push it and I never run crazy heavy (more than 100,000). -
I have...less gauges than fingers...
-
You’re not trying to buy a truck either. If and when you decide, the full gauge package is what you want. Idiot lights only tell you something’s wrong AFTER something goes wrong. With the gauges, you will see somethings wrong before it grenades. Next time you ride down I68, count how many trucks are dead on the sides of the road.
