I just got my CDL A class last Wednesday. I got my doubles, triples, tanker and hazmat that Friday. This week so far I will have an interview with YRC for P&D and later this week with Holland for Line Haul.
I figured Union would be a good thing because I have zero saved for retirement. I'm 34 so maybe getting a pension and a 401k would be a good thing.
I know a trainer from Holland who says Linehaul is a good place to start out of trucking school. Being that there is less stress as far as: a ton of backing in, the city of Chicago, and day driving. He also says the money is far better in line haul.
I'm married with a 2 and 1 year old at home. Wife works fulltime. Line haul maybe detrimental to the family life right?
Thanks for any advice

Think most linehaul drivers are out and back. Maybe away from home 1-2 days a week
-
According to my Holland contact I'd be out "most" of the week.

Check out truckingboards dot com for a wider ltl spectrum as far as pension concerns and the Union ordeals with both companies before signing on the dotted line.

Most union jobs will pay more and your benefits will probably cost you a lot less than at most other companies. Some union jobs the company pays 100% for benefits. The pension at union companies can be great. But only some of it is guaranteed. I believe, in some cases the pension you expect can disappear.
The 401k most non-union jobs allow employees to to contribute is all your money. The only way to lose all of your money is if the investments you choose evaporate. You are usually limited in the choices of what to invest your 401k contributions into. However you can contribute nothing to 401K and choose to contribute to whatever you want in a Roth or Traditional IRA.
I'm generally not a union person, but if you have a good shot at working for a union company, and you have a family, I'd probably to do so. YMMVSlayerfan84 Thanks this. -
I'm reading on another forum that there basically is no pension right now or in the near future. With that said, the only benefits of Union I see are the health insurance and pay. I'm also reading though Holland has gone down hill tremendously, (some calling it the Swift of LTL). I am reading the trucks are old and in bad shape. The only benefit I see is getting experience.
