that's what I get $0 it isn't that much but never have any problems getting it
longbedGTs Thanks this. -
But yeah, places that want you to side for a day or two between loads, something is wrong there. -
I was actually referring to an OTR situation...company driver. I know back in the day things were a lot different...but now, times have changed. No progress is made when you do things they way they've been done in the past. A drivers time is worth something...period. How much is to be determined, but I think a driver should be compensated for their time. Time is money, no?
This is more important now than ever because wages are on the rise, prices are going up, everything is going up. People need to make more money to live the life they desire. Let me tell you...sitting in the back of a truck not getting paid is one sure way to deprive yourself of that precious paycheck. Who is willing to do that? I have and I didn't like it...so I went somewhere else for more money. Don't let yourself be taken advantage of.
I got $500 for sitting Saturday and Sunday last week. I was satisfied. Then this past Sunday, I sat again. I then asked for compensation for sitting. Nothing. Every day I sit, I expect to be compensated for. Any employer should expect their employees to want to be compensated for their time. It shouldn't be a surprise.Last edited: Sep 25, 2018

I can't remember the last time I asked for layover pay. -
You should just be happy you get the chance to layover the doghouse and rest a little! Oh wait sorry that is from days gone by.

My layover lay over pay depends on the customer. We've had a few customers want me to lay over, we have an odd ball place that from May to early Sept. was having production issues, so we'd show up to load and be told the load was 6 hrs late. Twice the broker wanted me to lay over, both times the boss told me to get a hotel (I have a sleeper) and a nice meal, she back charged the broker double and still paid me $120.
My best layover pay came back in June. Had a HHG export for 8 am on a Friday in Abq., on the way down Thursday night my A/C quit, so I got a hotel room. Next morning, I checked out, head to the customer. It was supposed to be a 4 hr HHG live load, 40' hi-cube container. Was told it was a crew of 4 loading me. Well, they screwed up scheduling, so instead of an experienced crew of 4, I got the warehouseman with a broken arm in a cast/sling, 3 new hires and 2 temps. 11 hrs to load. It was 96 deg., I had no a/c and couldn't go back to the hotel, the M&S company would not let me drop and leave once they started. My boss billed the steamship line 1.75x the original rate, which was then billed back to the M&S customer. IIRC, my layover on pay on that was $40/hr plus lunch for me and a friend that lives in Abq who took me to lunch, plus they bought me dinner on the way back to Denver, then they gave me the following Monday off with pay, because I didn't get home until 5 am on Sat. and had to cancel plans for Sat.plankton and longbedGTs Thank this. -
I usually get quite a bit when my trailer is tied up for a couple of days in June I was in Kansas city and customer wanted 72 hours to unload the truck and I was paid $600.00 for this which isn't a whole lot for a owner operator but due to the fact I did some power only for 2 days which brought in a tad over 2ooo plus the load paid 2400 and the load back paid 1750 so ended up grossing over 6700 on 1890 miles. worked for me just fine
plankton and longbedGTs Thank this. -
Now i’ve also set myself up where i was kind of a back up, on call guy where i charged $500 a day minimum whether the truck moved or not. My routes already had negotiated rates, over that 500 mark normal rates applied.longbedGTs Thanks this.
