I decided to really focus on short hauls in September as an overall experiment and to see how it washed out in the end result. Since my month is officially over, I was able to compile the numbers fairly quickly as I keep a running spreadsheet(s) of everything I do in my operation.
I will say that this method of running requires more overall work because you're planning more, interacting with more people in general, more paperwork, billing, etc. However, because I'm already organized and have a system in place, it wasn't too bad emphasizing short hauls. These are dry van hauls in the PNW.
Here's what it looked like:
$18,050 Revenue
4548 Loaded Miles
870 DH Miles (19%)
5418 All Miles
$3.97 Gross Loaded RPM
$3.33 All Miles RPM
21 Loads Completed
1 TONU
258 Miles Average Length of Haul
22,242 Average LBS Per Load
7.96 MPG
23 Nights At Home
I'm going to try & repeat the same process in October because I REALLY like being home 23 nights a month![]()

The other aspect about running this way is one has to be willing to shift direction on the fly. But when you're only averaging 260 miles per load on the average, that's not hard to do LOL.

do you have your own authority?

Yeppers. I have since December 2015. Wouldn't have it any other way.20 Mule Team, fordconvert, whoopNride and 4 others Thank this.

What were you doing to find your loads? Were you just on the load boards the whole time? Were you using your own trailer? Im buying a truck soon with no class a experience and every lease company wants me to have a year experience or more. Im thinking about just getting my own authority and trailer and doing it like that right out the gate. Trying to gather as much info as possible. this is a very helpful post.Last edited: Sep 29, 2018

Well done. Tires are gonna go bad of old age before tread wear. lol
fordconvert, 86scotty and Scooter Jones Thank this. -
SHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Don't let the cat out of the bag! As long as people keep thinking there's no money in local, home-every-night type of loads, they continue begging for the long-haul 1500+ mile loads and refuse the short haul stuff...making it lucrative for those of us who like being home. If everybody wanted the local stuff, rates on it would tank...supply & demand. If local work is what you enjoy, you should be shouting from the rooftop that THERE IS NO MONEY IN SHORT-HAUL!!!

SHHHHHHH, dont mentioned it’s in skateboarding where the money is.......Scooter Jones Thanks this.

That’s why when I was a company driver at Crete I hated the short loads, they made a killing and I didn’t.
But Tuck, that’s the only load we have...CorsairFanboy Thanks this. -
At least with skateboarding, it's "too much work" for 99% of door slammers to be successful at it. Besides, they'd never be able to waddle their 400# behinds up onto the trailer to properly secure and tarp their loads.Diesel Dave Thanks this.
