I've got my eye on a 86 freightliner, big cam 400 single axle, seems decent and 30K on the inframe. Would you guys recomend buying such an older truck for 6K? If I can find work for it great, but if not, the main goal would be to tow a 40' toyhauler.
Can anyone shed some experience on the reliability of this truck. Thanks

Is it a cabover? I would think it would be hard to find work. It has some bad points such as it is a single axle and it is over 20 years old. It would be a neat hobby truck expecially if it is a cab over.

400 big cam motors were a popular motor. What does it have for a transmission? It sounds like a fun truck but not very practical from a work stand point. Do you know what it was used for? It's history might be interesting.

It has 13 speed, not sure what kind though. The owner states he used it as a hay truck for 13 yrs.

Does anyone have specs on horsepower and torque for that engine?

Hay hauler that makes sense. Good luck to you. Keep us posted on your decision and what you do with it if you buy it.

IMHO 6k is high, and it's not a classic. You can buy a brand new Kia for that.

The truck is only as good as the applications it can be used for, and it is limited. It can't be free, but the price should be nominal just to make it worth changing hands. But, with these things and single owners, they tend to be sentimental and remember what they paid for it back in the day...sooner die than take less...and they just may before they get it!

I dont think an 86 will have to be carb compliant, do they>?:biggrin_2554:

It also needs to rear tires, so far I've talked him down to 4700, I just dont want to keep beating up my truck to pull the toy hauler, figured this thing would do the job without complaining.
