I'm reading a lot of info on various ways to obtain your fingerprint/background check and it's a lot to sift through. I just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly:

I can take the hazmat test at the time I take my CLP test, even though I don't have the fingerprints or background check and then send in the fingerprint paperwork later, right?
I'm not in any rush to get the cert. so it seems like it'd be easiest to just take the test to make sure I pass it okay and then send it all in. I won't be getting my CDL until several months after I get my CLP, so the delay in time in which it takes between when I pass the test and when they confirm that I've done my background check in order to put the endorsement on my license is not an issue...

It’s really not a big deal. Go to TSA spend 15 min there get your prints and background then go take the test. Done and done. I took it with all the other endorsements when I had my CLP. Got the regular license and everything was on it.

It just that right now it's hard for me to take off work and at the same time, I'm anxious to get the testing over with for my CLP. Right now it's a lot easier for me to take off work once than twice. Also the material is very fresh on my mind.

I thought it took several days for the background check to go through?

I guess you are saying I should leave work, go to TSA, submit everything, then go to take my CLP test without any of the background paperwork and they'll receive the background status later on?

In other words your answer to my intial question of whether or not I can take the test before getting the background check completed is "yes"?

I could be wrong but at least here in N.C. you can do them in either order and the endorsement applies as soon as the govt gets all the results. But you should call your local DMV and ask them if you can come directly from tsa.

I literally drove from the TSA place to the DMV when I did mine because our teachers let you come late to class to do it and I didn’t want to miss drive time after lunch.

Yes, that's what I just did. Took CLP test and endorsements first. A couple weeks later I did the background check. There's nothing to send in though, they handled all that and sent me a letter about 10 days later saying I passed. Still don't have my CDL.

It is not the TSA that actually takes the finger prints, it is a contracting company that takes the finger prints and it takes anywhere from 1 week to 6 weeks to get a response from the background check.

The problem is that many DMVs will not allow you to have a hazmat on your permit because until the back ground check is done and back in their hands by you to see if you pass, you can't run hazmat loads legally.

This is because the permit is for driving and the endorsement that could be added to the permit means you qualify for hazmat work, hence until you actually qualify, then you will have to wait.

It is a quick thing to do, $87 and it is all on computer.

On my permit it states "HAZMAT test passed." She said the actual endorsement will be added when I get my CDL. In Michigan.
