Great advice, but the 250k mile trucks are exceedingly hard to find. What I've been told is that big trucking companies are holding onto their trucks longer because manufacturers aren't making new ones quickly enough to keep up with demand.

True, but you can still put that same warranty and use the same concept on a 350 or 400 mike truck. I believe it’s up to 500k. Same price regardless.

Edit: and congrats most don’t even make it through that post before getting bored and thinking they know better.

When you say dealer, is this for any used truck dealer, or Paccar dealer only?

I was ignorant and didn’t know about any of this stuff so I took my trucks to Cummins and had to pay to have them inspected, pay to have anything fixed that was wrong, then purchase the warranty on top of that. So you can walk in off the street if you’d like, but knowing now what I didn’t then, have this process done while the dealer is still on the hook for fixing anything that Cummins finds needing done. Then your only out the 4500 for 2 yrs 200k warranty. It’ll pay for itself very quickly.

That’s obviously very high. Back in December I bought a 2014 with 315k on it for only 58k. Factory warranty ends next month so before then I’ll take it to Cummins to buy the encore 2 coverage. That’s another little secret. If you are fortunate to find a truck with factory warranty remaining, then as long as you go in before that’s finished they must fix any problems before selling the encore.

However I went all the way to Fargo ND in the middle of dead nuts winter but hey whatever it takes.

Are you looking on truck paper? Expand your search way out. Or call that dealer and ask what their best prices is, and when they say 85k tell them you couldnt come look at it unless for 80k.

Got a 17' Cascadia, DD15, DT12 AMT with 590000 miles that's been trouble free. This is a team driven truck. It came equipped with an APU which I highly recommend for these newer engines. With the APU, we don't idle, obviously, and that's the trick with these engines. I would look at a DD15 that came equipped with an APU. As long as the maintenance was done, you can't go wrong with that setup and will get good fuel efficiency. Also we were in a 12' truck with DD15 and put 800000 trouble free miles before this one. I'm sure that truck easily went a million miles before major work.
