I was just throwing it out there because when you change the fuel filers, you can put the filter on dry, flip the key, hear it run and then normally the truck fires right up. I figured it might be worth checking?

If you're running a davco-style filter, make sure the dome is properly installed.

May have discovered the problem. Stopped at B-Line in Sweetwater this afternoon for a PM. Told the guy what was happening and said if you find anything let me know.
2 mins later he called me and asked me to come look at my fuel filter. He asked me who did your last PM? I told him Rush Truck Center in Commerce City CO. He showed me the filter and it was black. And the fuel inside the reservoir under the filter was equally disgusting.
Those ******* didnt change my filter so it had almost 30k miles on it. Not that it’ll do any good but I am going to let them know.
Don’t know if this is the cause but im betting its one hell of a suspect. Will see.BigBob410 Thanks this. -
Be suspicious of microbials, that black sounds familiar. Too familiar.

I had a problem with algae plugging my filters recently also. No warning either. I've been treating the fuel each fill up with killem. Hopefully it gets rid of it.

I don't think it was your filter I could be wrong, I had the same thing happen to my truck to we're some time I had to use eater to get it started, your fuel rail is mostly the problem that was my problem, it stop the fuel from returning back to the tank after it is prime, so if you can hear the fuel going back to the tank after you turn off the truck, it's going to be costly if you don't have warranty on it, that is how you can tell it that is the problem,

Update: Had a second filter turning black only after 8k miles. Bought a filter. Put a clear bottle under the Fuel/Water separator. First thing out, coolant and quite a bit.
Since I have warranty I took to Rush. I don’t have the final diagnosis but the initial prognosis is Injector Sleeves. The idea is to get the warranty to replace the Head since the Cummins sleeve replacement doesn’t seem to be a permanent fix as they have ongoing problems. Will see where it is tomorrow, Monday.
Black filter: soot getting into the return back to the tanks and then of course coming back to the seperator.
Basically. A mess. -
