Experience can eliminate some of the deadhead and layover time by not accepting loads into areas known to have few return loads .
Is Class B expediting the way to go?

My better half does not want to go out Teaming again so I need to make it happen on my own. There is no local jobs here available to me - at least thats what I am to think as nobody calls me back. Too many people looking for driving jobs I guess.
I have no problem with layovers - provided that you can at least make some money...is this still possible given the economy right now..?? How much can I expect..? Any help would be great.

I prequalified with FedEx Custom Critical back in '07 but went flat-bedding instead..yeah go figure that one ~lol~... Would probably been off with expediting, less work more money...I enjoyed Flatbed, just wish there was more money in it.

FedEx Custom Critical does have a couple of flatbedders (actually one or two has a stepdeck) and they do very well .

This is just an OBSERVATION!!! Usually, in my area (O'Hare airport, Chicago) the number of expediters at any given time is WAY down. Used to see 5-10 C or D units (vans, sprinters) and a handfull of A & B units. These days (Feb 09 onwards) I've only saw one panther A unit. It's the one I usually see on I90, a blue Panther t2000 usually heading west. Could also be due to the holidays + economy. I believe Caterpillar was one of the bigger customers locally, and they've really cut back recently. I'd highly suggest researching the main shippers that use expedite, and see how they're doing financially.
This observation comes from a former class D expediter (E250 Van) that was doing alright up until November 2008 running in the Northern IL/Southern WI/Indiana/Ohio area. ? for OTR500. How does that work having a 28'box and 96" sleeper? Unless it was a modified cabover, you'd have a truck that's over 40'. making it illegal in several states. Please explain this.

There is rarely ever any appointment time in expediting. When you get there, as long as they are open, you generally are unloaded right away. They need the stuff you are carrying now, otherwise it would likely go LTL or truckload...

Also,you can get in a situation where the shipper can be very slow loading you. Then they want it delivered on a time they promised the reciever.
Expedite is a hurry-up and wait line of work. It takes a very patient and self-motivated driver. Lots of highs and lows. -
Patience is the name game here! You can take a high paying load into an area that may not be so good for a return trip out, but if you're patient, and wait, you will eventually get something out of there, or your carrier will move you to another city that has better freight opportunities. I hear out west is bad for van freight, and down in Laredo area.
