14 inch clutch disc order

    I'm putting in my 14 in Easy pedal clutch but it's been in my garage for a while and they're a little rusty

    I can see the first plate says flywheel side and I thought on the second plate I saw intermediate side. I tried to wipe some of the rust off and I wiped off the writing, but I'm pretty positive it said intermediate side. The part that accepts the splines on the intermediate side hits the splines on the front disc when I put it together rather than the disc itself hitting the intermediate plate.

    So basically I can read the writing on the first disc, that one is okay. The second disc has a long side for the splines and a short side. The side that said intermediate plate has the longer splines, so the side for the pressure plate has short splines.

    Is this correct and if so how can this work? For the clutch to engage disc 1 has to be up against the flywheel, the intermediate plate has to be against disc 1, disc 2 has to be against the intermediate plate and the pressure plate has to be against disc 2. Here are photos.

    "A little rust". It looks like it came off the titanic. I wouldn't even use it.

    Without the markings it's hard to say. I think the long hub snout goes toward the pressure plate.

    The roof is leaking on my garage and the moisture got to the plates. I think it looks worse than it is because the splines are completely clean and the face of the pressure plate and the intermediate plate are completely without rust.

    It's not possible to put the long snout toward the intermediate plate because the clutch will never engage, as the snouts hit each other.

    Yet when I flip it the clutch disc still won't completely engage the intermediate plate.

    Maybe I should just think about buying a new clutch.

    Go to the place you bought it or so ewhere else that sells heavy truck parts and ask them if you can look at a new in box clutch to see how it is oriented.

    Long hub goes toward the transmission. Short hubs go together and the slightly longer one goes toward the flywheel.
    Put the first disc in the flywheel with a line up shaft and be sure it clears while turning. There are different hub models and you could have the wrong one. I have seen one marked incorrectly.
    The surface rust really does not bother me just clean up as needed. Be sure the discs slide on the input shaft before assembly, same as I check all new clutch discs. It is better to know now than later.

    Thank you everyone for your help.

    I cut down an old shaft as my alignment tool. I lined everything up and tightened in the proper sequence and it's situated the way it should be.

    The pressure plate and the intermediate disc and the splines are absolutely completely clean and rust free.

    This was a brand new clutch that I never used but I bought quite a few years ago and the wetness in my garage made it look worse than it is. The inside of the pressure plate cleaned up like brand new.

    @BoxCarKidd I think you are exactly right. I think the plate for the second disc was marked incorrectly. As I looked at the discs and how they fit together I could see the way that they were supposed to go.

    Goodysnap is a for hire tech and you are doing your own. If he put something in questionable the customer would still want him to warranty it. If he did not then the customer might talk bad about him to everyone in town. Just saying I respect his opinion and appreciate his posts. He brings much to the table.

    You are correct. I cant blame him for installing the clutch as is. If I had purchased the clutch with my own Benjamin's and it was my own truck I surely would be cleaning it and installing just the same, but never in a customer's vehicle...........

    I absolutely 100% agree. @Goodysnap has given me excellent advice in the past and I would trust whatever he says.

    You, he, and a few others have been a great help when I really needed it.

    Sometimes a little advice goes a long way.
