I just want to throw this out there. DONT DO IT.

I ate supper with JD once and his arms were like popeye's arms. I was waiting for him to open up a can of spinach and get out a pipe.

I like it. I have seen guys take 3 trailer boxes and face two out and weld the third one facing up. Think lower case “n” then drop that down over the frame rails. 5’ tall side lockers on the truck.

I carry a mix of both, there are times when a ratchet won't work, like under the back of a skin cart.

As @johndeere4020 has said, keep them clean, lubed and use them often, there will be no need for a bar. However, unfortunately with an open rack and winter chemicals on the road, if you don't use them every couple days it's almost impossible to keep them really free.

I gather up old ones that other drivers have left at the terminals because they froze up, break them loose with some PB Blaster and big bars, wire brush them really good then lube them with Silicone Spray. That's how I wind up with a rack full of different binders and often times these "no longer useable" ones still have the tag on them and are only no longer useable because they never got used or taken care of.

@kylefitzy and I can show you how to scavenge the terminals and get a great load of gear, binders, short chains, short straps, tarps, padding. It's all there, thrown to the side by the diva drivers who are afraid they'll get dirt on their flip flops using gear that's not brand new and shiny. I have an enclosed rack full of shiny new stuff and 99% of the time I use the "thrown away" gear I liberated from the terminals because it works better. I don't need a 20' chain to go 18" or a 30' strap for 10'

My favorite ratchet binders are ones I found in Wichita. Rusted up good but I got them cleaned up and working. They are 1/2-3/8 binders so I get my full rating on the 3/8 g70 chain we use.

I just had to swap with a guy and we traded 4 ratchet binders. His were brand new and mine were well used. Same brand same size. I’m still kicking my self for that because these new ones don’t work worth a dang. I think the threads are still too sharp. I need to wire wheel them and see if that helps.
