We'd take old brake shoes, cut the old lining off, clean and paint the shoe. The lining material came in a big flimsy roll, cut off what you need. Air operated riveting tool was actuated by stepping on the pedal, both your hands were busy holding the shoe and lining steady. Be careful you didn't have your finger in there.
When I first got out of high school,I went to work for IHC in downtown Baltimore,as a truck mechanic. Great job,Union benefits, good pay, lots of factory training. They sent me to Cat,Detroit, and Cummins school on their nickel. Got invaluable lifetime knowledge, eternally grateful, always bought IH trucks .Made journeyman diesel mech.in a year. Spent about 4 years there, great job, really loved working on trucks, but I just couldn't see myself banging a time clock for the rest of my life. Besides, all the truck drivers would come in there and blow smoke up my dress about how great the road was,and all their stories of highway prowess...........and I believed them, lol.
Had a little money saved up,bought that old 69 C04070A in 1974,took a chance,left a good steady job,and never looked back.
The rest is just 40+years of trucking, with a little farming squeezed in.
Where is everyone #5
