Well, they do let those junkers across the border, and they break down, then they have to buy parts to fix them, which brings money into our country, so we can it back overseas to pay for the manufacturing of those parts, lol
Who wins? Mexico does.

What's not seen in that post that was posted, is just how many Mexican farmers were put outta work when NAFTA came in due to the fact that before NAFTA corn was a protected crop and there was no importing of corn allowed, that way the farmers had enough to send their children to school, after NAFTA corn could be imported which drove down the prices at the market and therefore many were put outta work, and guess where they went to for work

Ronno....
Ask any Dump truck O/O who shut down because NAFTA guidelines allowed Mexican dumps to run in CA under Mexican authority. I for one couldn't run a truck for $50-55/h.
You can if you don't have to have a CA#, current insurance.....
I was required to carry $2 million plus on both AL/GL.....Something our "brother" truckers from the south don't carry.
The contractors I used to go direct with, found a work around that allows them to use those trucks without liability. Everyone of the operators that I ran with who had direct contracts were given the option to drop their rates or take their business elsewhere. My brother still works for one of those contractors and not one of the third party trucks has an American driver, and he said all the plates are from Baja.....
That's how NAFTA benefited larger businesses I suppose. I guess I should consider myself lucky to live in a country where the needs of foreigners (Illegal, mind you) are weighed more heavily than the citizens. Maybe I'm selfish in that way Ronno.....
There is no way we can compete on a level playing field by running on the bottom and still remain legal with permits, fuel, mortgages ect......
I can't run in a 1980 Freightliner COE held together by wire and tape...how about you??? -
Individual circumstances such as yours do not negate advances made overall.
There were winners and losers prior to NAFTA and there will be losers during NAFTA.
Does California still have minority set-aside rules for State contracts? -
Yes they do...MBE and WBE.
We tried to get a WBE since my wife "Owns" 51% of the Corporation....NO go.....That was from the State btw.... The only way for her get that status, we would have to divorce so that she could be a single mother.....or I would have hire a minority woman and give her control of the company.
One of my buddies is still running dumps and he just happens to be a black guy....he is a registered as MBE and he doesn't get anything either in the way of contracts ect.....
I hate to say this but, with over 50% of CA legislators being of Hispanic decent, that reality has altered the way things are run in CA.
Not trying to be racist, but this S*** sucks.
You cannot run legally in CA with rates like $.80-.90...this is where competition is weighed in the wrong corner.walleye Thanks this. -
The reason I asked is because I read somewhere that being African American didn't count as a minority is California. Only Latin American owned companies were being considered.
This underscores my point that this sort of nonsense is a states call and can't be blamed on NAFTA.
California needs an enema.

Why are so many so against mexican trucks, the powers that be would say they do the job Americans wont do.I say start throwing all illegals out if they dont have the stones to do that then deal with the problems! The freight rate is falling bad enough now let a few more meican trucks in & we will all be using our trucks as lawn ornaments. I feel for ya RonMar have freinds in Ca its amazing how bad it is out there !!

Ronno...
do you realize that if the government banned all of the Mexican carriers from crossing the border and operating, that the rates would increase to a decent level?
Not overnight but, that would certainly go a long way to help out American carriers to go beyond just "survival mode".
There a lot of loads sitting where logic would dictate that they should be ran for at least $1.50/m. Those loads are handed to brokers who ask for bids submitted by carriers, many who either don't know their B.E.P., or they are out to run the rest of legal carriers out of business. There are so many loads going for less than $1/m because so many are willing to run for that rate. Not always the shippers fault, nor the brokers.
Those that claim they can run legally at a $1/m or less are either full of S***, or they're completely illegal in their operations.
Fuel for example is running most of us that have rigs that average 6-6.5 mpg at $.45-$.50/m.
So getting a load for $.80 is going to go a long way with $.35 TTT.....I don't think so.
