One place I picked up from had someone in shipping that always had a tude. They would just grab whatever paperwork was on top and hand it to you.

You could tell them it wasnt the right one, tell them the "magic number" but they would just grab the next BOL in the stack and hand it to you.

    Here we go again ...

Many years ago I pulled into a giant yard full of equipment to pick up load one of what was supposed to be 8 I had to get done in only 20 days, these were not short trips, and hundreds of kms of it were also on narrow and steep logging roads still not even completely built. Load one i was to pick up a dozer and two excavator buckets. They said go inside for a coffee while we load you. I come out and 4 skid steers on my trailer. A long discussion later they unloaded them, and put on the dozer and buckets. I chained it all down and left. Well every single trip was a long discussion about what I was really supposed to take, not what they wanted to load me with. Well i got it all done, and wasn't back there for likely a full year or more. Well eventually I go back and think OMG here we go again. I said i need that loader there, and wow its just loaded right on, I chain it down and am ready to go. I commented on how much smoother the place seems to be running, and the young man informs me it was sabotage by a disgruntled former manager. I was glad I just stood my ground and made them give me the right machines, not what their paperwork said.
Different than your scenario I know OP, just thought I would share the story.

I was at my 1st stop near LA and handed the receiving clerk stop 2's bill. When I noticed while they were unloading I went to give her the right bill. She already stamped it without noticing too. I tried to laugh it off because it really wasn't a big deal but she gave attitude the rest of my stay....whateva

Wrong bills no, did bring back a half trailer full of bottles once at at part-time job. Worked for a spring water company that also had a blow mold plant and sold bottles to dairy plants. Took a load of half gallon jugs out to Johnstown, PA (250 miles) and was to bring back an empty trailer. Apparently they had a production slow down and the trailer wasn't fully empty, didn't look inside with a flashlight. They were not very happy.

In my real job as a car hauler had a lot attendent give me the wrong car once, it was raining and I did not check the VIN. Luckily it was a short trip and nothing was damaged, could have been bad.

Also had a driver that worked for me deliver a car to the wrong place, that cost a small fortune to correct.

This can be a major problem with a hazmat load.

We had a driver pick up a load in OKC. I can't remember the name of the town he was supposed to go to, but it's a common destination for oilfield equipment in North Dakota IIRC. He got a call as he was waking up on day two, asking where he was.

The problem was the town was in Michigan...

    ...oops.

    Read the whole address...
