Sorry, stop later at down the road and recover jack. Not in front of them. We are talking in the 60's early 70's running tandem, tandems. Before all the air.

The first few years of the Ohio Turnpike late 50's they had platform for weighing tandems, so folks around here would spread the tandems like 4 inches between drive axles so it didn't fit on all the way, but from the shack it looked like it was on. That was my grandfathers days.

Man, they would run the over weight permits for 1 and or 2 coils. Double out of mill with 2 coils per trailer. Had curtains made to slide over a bow. If a cop wasn't looking to hard he would slide tailgate open and shine a light in and only see one coil per trailer. Then you just give him one set of bills with 2 coils on it. Didn't work everytime, but it did work alot!

    That's funny.

I was setting at AK one day and a couple of the regular old timers that hauled outta there was telling a story about a guy that the DOT kept hassling.

Said he got this idea after helping build a float for some parade his daughter was in, as a joke build and paint up a fake coil and set it on his flatbed and not tarp it. Load it beside another one. Make it look like he was way overweight.

I dont know how true it was, but said he did it and it looked real from a distance. It didnt take long for the scale man to pull him over and look it over. I guessed it really pissed the scale man off. lol

How much $$ is in hauling steel? I’m not really in the rust belt by a lot; and the couple places round me that ship coils haven’t been places I’ve spoken to. Seems like some folks really get by only hauling coils.

I did ok years ago, but where I made the money was getting the 120k 90 day permit on 5 axles. You could put 2 40k pounders on and go, but I admit it was hard on #### doing it all the time.

I used to have a dedicated deal out of Franklin, OH (near AK ) that I took a coil to Rome Georgia 3 times a week. I did really well on that and it was steady.

Also, I saw a few guys snap their wagon in half getting greedy and stupid.
