I have a good friend whos one of the owners of a machine shop in Newton, KS. They have a few manual machines and when the need arises for me to do something bigger than my little hobby machines will handle he's gracious enough to let me use thier equipment. Now they are a production shop and have a beautiful selection of CNC equipment and I know just enough G code that I can do a fine job of crashing tools so those are hands off for me.
Anyway, many years ago Boeing sold off its Wichita production to Spirit. Spirit let many of the machinists go in favor of outsourcing that work. My friends company picked up a couple of these "experienced" operators (I say operator because it turns out these union machinists were not). Long story short, they could load the part and push the start button and as long as nothing went wrong they were a machinist, however if something did go wrong the only thing they knew was to push "stop" and wait on a supervisor. Don't even ask about setting up, that was something they watched a supervisor do. These were 25+ year professional machinists. He got better machinists straight out of the program at the high school.
I'm not saying all the guys from Boeing were that way, many are still in the area doing machine work and are amazing, but at least a few were not.ShooterK2, BigBob410, PoleCrusher and 12 others Thank this. -
She's young, early 20's. Surrounded by tools. If she was dating a guy around her age that wasn't afraid to work, she would have an advantage over most girls her age. That she would be willing to help him is a plus. Most girls her age would be trying to support a guy that has never had a job in his entire life. And they would be talking about having children.4mer trucker, ShooterK2, BigBob410 and 17 others Thank this.

There are some out there, and I promise my little girl will learn to work. She can have princess time, but she can learn to weld too. Seen a woman airing up her car tire, my first thought "how many mens lives she has ruined before she leaned that?" Or her dad was cool.Last edited: Oct 24, 2018

If she’s under the age of 45, there’s a pretty good chance she has never known a Man. Whenever I see a young woman changing a tire, I always wonder if she knows MJ.

Just ask her if she has a duck call in her pocket. If she does, no further proof is needed.Oxbow, Shock Therapy, 4mer trucker and 17 others Thank this.

My dad always said, "asker her if she has a 9/16ths wrench" If its close by or in her pocket, shes from a trucking family.

I knew a girl who told her boyfriend how to do an oil change on his 4 banger Honda. “Drain the oil, change the filter, and fill it up.”
He did just so. Filled it up to the top of the valve cover.beastr123, Oxbow, Shock Therapy and 17 others Thank this. -
If he still has it, man in Ohio has a Shaker like this with a 92 series V8 in it.
Was driving a KT powered shaker when my daughter was born in 88, always liked the wide cab.Oxbow, Shock Therapy, Logan76 and 14 others Thank this.
