You go through a number of drivers at orientation.

Poof they are gone by lunch monday, some more gone by tues and pretty much wed all that is gone is gone.

Then a few more when they are caught trying to omit some damming background stuff.

Ive been sent home a few times, usually related to hearing. One time I botched a simple road test, it's so simple. Drive to lght make a left we dock at the safeway there in the back. And I botched it. Three months later Im back for another go. This time in a raging rain storm where you could not see the back of the container for love or money. Passed that with flyng colors. Boss looked me over and said I guess you are a keeper. But god help you if you get distracted like last time.

I literally don't know to this day what happened to THEM. One day they were trucking and the next? Closed up.

 

Yep. One of the biggest reasons is §391.23. Contrary to what you might read in these forums that driver qualification file is NOT something a carrier can take lightly! If they have not received these reports back some carriers have no choice but send you home.

 

No, they do have a choice. The regulation requires that within 30 days from the date employment begins the carrier has made an inquiry in good faith for the background investigation as required. They are not under any regulatory obligation to withold employment until the investigation is complete nor are they obligated to withold employment if the previous emoloyer(s) fail to respond. They simply must document a good faith effort to comply, usually interpreted as three documented attempts. Then they have the option to report the precious employers failure to respond to FMCSA.

Now that said, out of an abundance of caution many large motor carriers will withold employment until a satisfactory background investigation is complete. It is their right to exceed minimum compliance, but to blame it on the regulations is misleading.

Bottom line, they need to better explain this since most drivers come to orientation believing they have already been hired, or at least hired on the condition of passing a drug screen and road test. Many drivers believe that companies have already done the background investigation before scheduling orientation. I know they don't due to the effort and cost as compared to how many prospective drivers never show up to orientation vs. how many may be sent home due to incomplete background checks.

 

I should have took better care. Notice in the part that you quoted I used the (qualifier) some. What I was trying to say was some carriers by their internal rules will not complete the hiring process until that DQF is finished. This is because the FMCSA is so dang tough on this. Carriers have been busted by the FMCSA over that DQF. This tends to make some of these carriers practice an overabundance of caution.

 

Absolutely correct. Using unqualified drivers is surefire way to recieve hefty fines and place your authority in jeopardy.
