Yes just a melted shape of steel. The round ones after going through the machine shop Inhave hauled to a company in Cincinnati, they make special drill steel adapters and joints from it.

Some of the raw plates are warped like fried bacon, I have taken them to the Keystone state to be pressed flat, bring them back here where they are ground smooth and cut to length. Then delivered raw or stacked in special pallets and taken to a port, then shipped overseas or used here in the states.

This plant makes most of the special steels / alloys in the US, and most were designed here to my understanding. This plant has been here since before the flood of 1937.

 

It's just a old tarp off one of our hoppers we use to lay down and keep the grain from splashing on the ground. It makes cleaning up a lot easier instead of shoveling up rocks and stuff.

 

Yeah a lot of companies in Ohio did before 08, both of our Western Stars have 60” spreads. Back then you could get 47,000 on a 60” spread, it was worth because you were limited to 55,100 on a tri with 63” spacings. So with enough swing and fifth wheel slide, an 11R steer, 47 on the drives and 55,100 on the trailer you could gross 119,700 on 6 axles.

 

First time I’ve seen that design. Wondering if a fella couldn’t use something like that on location to unload sand. The trend has been toward getting away from pneumatics cuz of the dust they make. Boxes solve that but have other problems.

Gotcha! Makes sense. Now I guess the 60" spacing wouldnt do as much for you in Ohio, right?

Like you said too, i could see tire scrub increase quite a bit with the 60" setup.

 

I should add that we're probably hauling around 1250 bushels or so. We usually don't fill the bin plum full. We leave the grain down about a foot from the top ring so a guy can go level the peaks out.

 

I bet it’s as good as anything I could get at a restaurant too!

It doesn’t help at all anymore, and it never really did on a tri axle because you were limited to 120,000. With 60” spacings on a tri you could carry 54,400 so it would help a little if you had a short neck but with 54” spacings you could get 53,700 and eliminate the tire scrub and eliminate a foot of frame rail.

 

Still a pretty healthy load.
