i have an older 1996 cb with 2 knobs for SWR CAL (inner and outside knobs).
anyone know what is the difference between them?
the swr meter needle does not work/move so i am unable to experiment with the knobs.

Did you buy it new? Looks like an echo set up to me...
-
Yeah I bet you have an echo board in there. Do you have talkback? If not ask for a radio check with it on. If it’s too high I’m sure they’ll let you know.
-
Inner is used to fine tune and if I remember right, the outer is used for adjustingMr.Mongo Thanks this.

Inner is the volume of the echo, whereas outside is the delay.
For a nice reverb sound, outer knob should be pretty far counterclockwise. Volume (inner) also should be quite low. Too piss people off, keep ‘em both open. Please don’t do that though.artek Thanks this. -
While I understand why radio purists don’t like echo, I personally don’t mind a little on CB. It doesn’t add signal strength or make you walk over other stations. It does make your otherwise normal transmission sound more pleasant when set quite low and fast. This is called reverb. Music producers have done this since the 50s. Most people don’t listen to Johnny Cash and think, “wow, nice echo!” But if you go back and listen you’ll notice it now. The point isn’t for an echo effect. The point is far a warmer sound, like an orchestra in a large—aka live—hall.
Mr.Mongo Thanks this. -
I’ll add that even some classical orchestral recordings have added reverb in the production stage. Anti-echo people often claim echo is too annoying unless it’s low, and when it’s low enough, it might as well not even be there. I disagree. When it’s low enough, it warms the sound. It’s not so much about continuing your speech as it is about constructing with it. When it’s too high, then it’s annoying.
I do love a clean radio without echo as well. -
I’ve never seen an echo control where the SWR knob was. But I guess it’s the best option on that radio. Besides you could just get an external SWR meter.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Cobra put delta tune on some of their models solely to make them more attractive to mod. I mean that control is useless on an AM only radio. They know it’s going to be replaced with echo.Night Stalker10 and artek Thank this. -
Tested on PA, the inner knob is indeed echo.
Thanks allMr.Mongo Thanks this. -
Ok most likely the person who hacked it up disconnected the swr adjustment because they used a pot with a rating for the mod they put in. You may have a variable output and an echo both on the same knob.
The only way to find out is have it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing.
The original radio came with one knob for swr adjustment.artek Thanks this.
