This thread always moves so fast. 16th birthdays, guys wearing aprons, fun with hazmat.... Several pages to read since I last read this morning. Good times!
A little story from my day.. I pull into a truck stop on my way to a drop off to grab some lunch. The parking layout is of the "EZPZ" type, where it's pretty much all angled pull thru spots. What could possibly go wrong?
As I'm selecting a spot I notice a truck that despite the low difficulty parking setup, is parked like an a-hole. The tail end of his trailer is 1/3 of the way in the parking spot to the right. I mean, screw any other driver who may want to park there! I pull into the spot next to the encroached one. I look in the driver's seat of the a-holemobile, and it's your standards disgusting fatbody slob of a trucker sitting in it stuffing his face with the day's cholesterol count. I make eye contact with him, and then look back at his trailer, then back at him. Repeat this two or three times, to indicate to him "what's up with that, my dude?"
I get out, lock my door, and repeat the same. Ended my body language with a shake of my head and shrug of my shoulders. Maybe it was rude of me (don't care). Perhaps unkind (really don't care). Just saw it as one of those indications of inconsiderate laziness that drives me crazy. After I went inside and grabbed my food, said doofus was getting ready to leave. Somehow another truck had shoe horned its way into the spot that dingus's trailer was encroaching, which meant a part of this new addition was probably perilously close to my rig. I stop walking because I didn't want to risk getting squashed by dingus... Better to wait. Another driver, a clean looking older hand walks up next to me and looks and says "WHAT THE ****?!?!".
I say "Yeah, quite the spectacle isn't it".
Genius trucker almost took out the front end of the truck which had schooched in next to him. Fortunately, the driver of that truck was in attendance and backed up pretty quick to avoid any unwanted removal of parts.
Driver standing next to me says "Well, good thing that other guy moved, that almost got ugly"
I reply "Yeah, but it doesn't help that the rocket genius who just pulled out was parked like a total gomer"
Bring this up because when I got home this evening, my wife was telling me about her day. She mentioned one of her clients came in for a chat (she's a tax accountant), and this client is the owner of a good size construction/excavation company in the area. He told her that he's been having a hell of a time finding quality employees... truck drivers in particular. She knows what he pays his employees and said "it doesn't make sense to me".
I said to her "It's easy. Too many drivers are like this dingus I saw at the truck stop today. Lazy individuals who just want to door slam, but then complain about how much the pay sucks. Yet they'd scoff at a better opportunity because they might have to climb in and out of the cab more than once a day. They can't even be bothered to take the 5 extra seconds it would have required to not park their truck like an idiot, what makes you think they'd be interested in driving a transfer truck or haul equipment?" -
I would want it to perform like the F&F dually, but pull an old travel trailer. Grassburner exhaust out the passenger side. Turbo diesel. Huge torque numbers. -
A business partner and I ran into this a couple years ago while looking for help. His wife summed it up perfectly.
"Everybody worth hiring already has a job".
She was dealing with similar issues at her job.
