I have a question about my cb amplifier . Awhile back ago someone keyed up on my amplifier . With the antenna disconnected ! Now when I hook amplifier up to watt meter . I get less wattage ! Than the radio itself puts out . Any answers on why it's doing this ? It's not even getting 3 watts max . Out of a two pill linear . Thanks !

Key up with no antenna hooked up, and it's "fried"....

Popped the pill's! ..........It's "Smoked"....You can take the top off and look at the small resisters near the transistors and they will probably look black, which means the transistors are toast...

These bugger's here is what your looking for...If they are brown or black they are toast, and so is the transistor next to it...(most likely both will be fried)

If you did pop the pills, buy some online from HG if they are 2879’s for about $60, then have someone replace them. You will have $90 or so compared to the $150-200 you’d spend on a new one.

He didn't say...but it depends on what Amp he has and what's in it...If it's something like a KL 203, it would be cheaper just to buy a new one.

I forgot to hook up the antenna on my Uniden 520 and KL203P amp a while back. When I keyed the radio with the amp off, the SWR shot into the bad zone. So, brilliant guy that I am, I turned the amp on and repeated the process to see the same results. After playing around with it for a minute, I realized I forgot to connect the antenna!! This is a constant risk for a slip-seat type hook-'em-up and pull-'em-out process that I go through.

Fortunately for me, the radio and amp seem unharmed. I tested them both and found they are still producing the wattages they were producing before my little unintended experiment in radio abuse.

I don't know why some fry quickly and, obviously, some don't.

Just keying the radio up without a antenna connected doesn't nessesarly blow the finals...It's when you do that and start a conversation that blows everything up.

The amp needs to be repaired, the amp transistors are shot, three watts out I bet one is bad and one is working.

A good shop can fix it for under $100.
