I think the topic of what to do with the unemployed/underemployed is best left for the political forum, so I won't elaborate on that topic here, heheheh.

Eh yes and no. How many folks see ads for IT, Trucking, Corrections promising stable careers, good money and benefits etc etc I see twenty ads and 6 billboards a day.

MBAngel , I was wondering how you made out getting your three interviews ? I'm currently in the same situation. I was recently laid off and had to file for unemployment benefits for the first time in almost 30 years. I was telling the lady at the unemployment office how hard I thought it would be to find a ne job at 56 years old. I told her I was considering going to a truck driving school but had to find a way to pay for it because I recently had hernia surgery that will cost me several thousand dollars out of pocket. She suggested applying for this grant. So far I haven't had any luck getting anyone to agree to an interview. The drivers that I've approached just don't want to be bothered. There's a Loves Truck Stop a couple hours drive from my house. I'm thinking I will drive out there and park with a sign on my pickup saying that I'll give $10.00 to answer the 16 questions.

I got one person to respond from this forum. Then I found out I actually knew two ppl who had driven truck. I can't actually help you either, since I have my cdl and am getting ready to go off to my new job :) One place I found a lot of truck drivers who knew the life was the instructors at the schools, lol. Not sure how you'd interview them before you go to school tho, lol. But yeah, going to a truck stop, and offering to buy coffee, or a dinner for a driver while they answer your couple of questions might work - do not knock on truck doors, the drivers may be trying to get their 10 in and interrupting their sleep could cause issues. Or, you could go to the local cdl motor vehicle office (in my city the cdl office is separate from all other driver services). All drivers have to go there at some point, and maybe you could hit one or two up on their way out (if they got good news there, they'll be cheerful, lol.. if not they could be cranky). I also got a dot physical early, to make sure that I'd be healthy enough for this career, as an older person, and there are a lot of drivers waiting their turn at some of those places who might enjoy the diversion of answering questions. Look up the ones that offer no appointments necessary and there will be a long wait, lol.

Oh! I just thought of another place - truck repair shops. I'll bet there's a driver sitting there waiting for his truck to be repaired. Cat scales - a driver getting weighed out before moving on might be willing to be bothered. Truck washes might have a driver sitting and waiting for his truck to be cleaned. Places where they sell trucks might have a guy or two standing around.

Walk around and talk to drivers sitting in thier truck maybe doing paperwor or having a ciggarette. Stay away from the "drivers lounge". People in the lounge waiting for a shower may be an exception. The lounge drivers that are always talking are just full of hot air and don't know what's going on because thier mouth is running so much. :D

Alot of good ideas. Thanks ! I would never knock on anyone's door. That seems like a sure fire way to piss someone off.

Yeah, nobody knocks on you door for anything good. They want to sell you gold chains, party favors, or dirty booty.

Having done grant requests for a local charity over the years, these sorts of things are common. A multitude of repetitive questions that look like nonsense on the surface.

However, it weeds out the ones that aren't serious or cannot follow simple instructions or read or construct a reasonable sentence. It also reveals the level of commitment and interest in the subject matter. It's a way of being sure grant money is being given to the best candidate.

    Bluedew and LDYTRUCKER Thank this.
