cruise not working

I have 2006 C12 engine I own the truck about a year, currently when I applied the cruise control it doesn't work and the check engine light start blinking for about 5 or 6 times and then it turned off. What do you suspect on this situation? Is that a precaution for engine failiour? Thank you in advance for your information!

I did the code test, when the cruse is off I get 5 5
When I turn it on I get 5 5
So this means the on off switch is bad?

 

Code 55 means no codes. Since you said you can read codes with switch on or off id say yes switch or wiring is bad

 

I have a 98 freightliner c10 car
Cruise is out, when I ck for codes I get 2 of 8
Also I get codes with cruise on and off.
Any clues
