This time of yr its not bad but I still hate the 47 miles of 55 fn mph when workers are present for maybe 15miles of it total. I like the scenic route from Memphis to my house. My students on the other hand....dont care for hwy 61 from La Crosse to Davenport lol. Just a few small hills I dont see the issue.

    I don't mind hills.

I had a scenic tour today, myself. I picked up at Leinenkugel in Milwaukee. Was almost out of hours and needed to do some laundry so I decided to park it in Richfield for the night... only thing is that I don't know the best way there from 10th Street. So I ask my GPS. GPS says to take WI-145, Fond Du Lac Avenue for 8 or so miles and that'll get me out to I-41. Looks like a pretty straightforward, 4-lane boulevard.... and it was. Except it is 5 p.m. local time.

At least only 4 miles of it was awful before it turned into a halfway decent expressway. Don't think I wanna try that again, though.

    P.S.

I'm with your students, I never cared for 61 either, but I did lile that little rest area right as you start it heading North. Quiet and peaceful for sleeping.

I take 61 everytime I'm on la crosse to Memphis, but it brings me just north of my house by Davenport. Also 61 is a very good teaching road. Hills, curves, truck route detour. Geta students accustomed to using the jake and stab breaking without it actually being a major mountain. Now winter time you wont find me on it lol

That's very true, it has all the features to be a good training road. You have good reasons to take it, just always seemed to eat up so much time to me. Don't know if it actually did, just felt that way.

It took me a bit before I realized that I have taken that road before.. or at the0 least part of it from Dubuque up to La Crosse and I liked it a lot.

With that 47mile stretch of 39/90 being 55mph and in the spring and summer the high rate of backups amd wrecks on that road I'd guess 61 is actually faster. Miles wise its much shorter and even with the hills I always cut time off my original ETA when typing it into the GPS. As long as I dont get caught behind a #### farm vehicle or a granny out for a Sunday drive, cuz trying to pass on that 2lane can be a mofo lol.

And Im pretty sure my student cussing me this morning. 2 30am wake up to have to drove on 61 in the rain, fog, amd darkness....anybody can drive on a 4 lane fn interstate in broad daylight. This is where they actually learn that its not all bout holding a steering wheel

Every time I get approached by a new driver from this thread, or someone who is about to go to school, I always tell them about the "two peril rule". It's a term I made up to describe comfort level. For example: rain and dark, rain and mountains, snow and mountains, etc. If you're dealing with 2, you're fine(ish). Throw in a 3rd, and you're about to enter the Real.

Snow, dark and mountains. Rain, dark, and fog. Or my personal favorite... blinding rain, high winds, and heavy traffic. It's always the rule of two, man. Two is manageable. Beyond that, it gets hairy. Soak in your time with your trainer, you'll be thankful for every inch of it later. I wish y'all had @keen98 as a trainer. Only met him once, but I feel like I know him after all this time. Hopefully you end up with someone like that who can prepare you for The Real.

Lord Pablo, MIT and MACK E-6 Thank this.
