Thanks to anyone who can help here, I really appreciate it.
Using a Spartan 23 channel ssb with a Redco Digi Scan attached that bypasses the radio's dial and ssb switch.
I have an older Stam Com 50 watt amp.
SWR meter is of course between amp and antenna.
I tune digi scan to 27.125
When I key the mic, the watt meter on swr is 2.5. When I switch on the amp, key the mic, it pegs the meter. but now, I turn the amp off and key the mic, the meter says 1/2 watt output.
This is the second time this has done this and when I go back to it the next day the scenario is the same as above.
My antenna is mounted on top of a metal shed.
I should have then maybe connected the cb to the swr and bypass the amp to check output but I haven't done that yet.
Do you think it could be that the swr meter is only good for 100w?
Or is the amp 50 watts per 1 watt cb output.
Or something in the amp?
Greatly appreciate any suggestions.

You don’t want to check the SWR with the amplifier in line. Remove the amplifier, get the antenna matched to the CB radio first, then install the amp.

It's already tuned. I am using the watt meter on the swr.

50w Amp? or you mean 500w Amp?
Not sure on your SWR Meter, but some meters have to first be calibrated before you can check the SWR...)Others do it automatically)...either way, a SWR of 2.5 is a bit-high to also be running a Amp...Need to get SWR 1.5 or lower....Since you said the antenna is mounted on a metal shed, it may-not have a good ground, or just needs some more tuning.
Another problem could be with the Amp itself...If it's fried, that can cause the SWR to spike when checking with Amp turned ON...Might just Key-up and go "AUDIO" and look at your watt meter and see if it's putting out any power...only problem doing this, is if the Amp is-not fried, keying-up and talking could fry it, if SWR is through the roof because of a bad ground...Think first thing to do would be to try and get SWR to 1.5 or lower... -
Let me clarify. The radio was tuned prior to the amp. Swr below one.
I am using the watt meter on the swr to see the output which was 2.5 watts before turning the amp on.
Yes, it is a 50 watt amp.
I get a lot of reflection from the metal roof on the shed.
The linear is a Stam Com SC-50T-BIL.
Thanks for the replies. I really appreciate it.jessejamesdallas Thanks this. -

This type of statement is misleading. It probably originates because of the combination SWR-Watt meter you seem to be using.
I would suggest that when discussing the use of the meter, that you refer to only one value at a time being read to avoid confusion: either the SWR or the Wattage. It is of no importance to know that the meter can read two values and is a combination SWR-Watt meter, and referring to it as such can lead to confusion.
