I have a 2012 Volvo VNL 670 and after 12h of idling the truck would do a 20min regen by getting the RPMs up. After 20min it shuts down, and then after 20min off it starts again. And keeps doing the same till I start driving. It has a clean filer, DPF and DEF, new Turbo new Catalist. I took it to Volvo and they changed the Catalist few clamps and $5100 later same problem. The truck will regen when driving just fine, its only the parked issue. I did notice my Temp usually doesnt go past 190 degrees so I bought a new Thermostat. Asked another mechanic if that could cause it he said maybe. But anyone has a similar issue? And as its colder now it starts every 8-9h of ideling before the RPMs go up.
2012 VNL670 keeps doing parked regens

Isn't a good idea to idle the newer trucks...Idling causes def filter to clog quicker....the more times a truck regens while parked the harder it is on the engine due to the extreme high temps during parked regen

Honestly I dont know. But its 30 outside and im cold so I have to let it run. Plus my Volvo has 800k miles.

Have you checked the 7th injector? Has it been replaced? Any codes coming up?

Yes, and not only the emission, back in July, my bull gear got damaged while sleeping parked idling . I was in hot Texas , without any APU or other AC options on the truck, the noise woke me up. I end up spending 30k $ on reman motor; It's been defective by design, but i believe the lower oil pressure at low RPM had something to do with it. PTO sets rpm to around 700rpm, and oil pressure doesn't go above 40-45psi at this rpm, perhaps didn't grease the gears properly.
I have Webasto for heating, it's quite affordable , around 1500 $ installed , have to save for some some sort battery powered AC and minimize idling. -
How did the bull gear get damaged by idling?
-
Well, i was at 1,1 million miles, but the motor was running great, 8-9 mpg, never added oil.
I dont know, i was driving on I-30 W in Texas all good running shooth, was late night got tired pulled over on the ramp at exit 178 to take a nap , idling for AC. After 2-3 hour i woke up by a loud banging, scratching noise coming from motor, right under the dash. I understand the idler gear gets lose from shaft and starts chewing the block or rear timing gears cover contaminating the oil and entire motor with metal shavings, interesting it didnt happen while driving.Last edited: Nov 13, 2018

Well that's what I was alluding to, the idling in itself wouldn't cause the bull gear failure as much as the million miles.

No codes. I will have them check it out.
