I think I understand what you trying to say. Are you saying the pay per load is better? So 65% of that will be higher than 82% with someone else?

 

With landstar it is 65% plus trailer % if applicable, plus 100% of the fuel surcharge. Is 82% of the all in rate?

 

Plus 100% surcharge but I would have to rent the trailer.

Yes I am with landstar.
At landstar you don't rent their van but you give up 7%
If you pull their flat or step, you rent their trailer and are paid the trailer % .I think it's 8% for flat and step

 

Very difficult in the prairies. But that's me as an outsider from Ontario looking in. How much work does landstar have in and out of Canada? Do you have access to the people who can load you? I would be more inclined to lease to a company you see on the road. Or you can check this website for a load board. The loads are real but you would have to pay for access. If it were me I would probably do flatbed in the prairies, seems to be in abundance. A dry box or reefer would be suicide. There is never anything paying that I've ever found. I don't even bother looking anymore.

I use this load board as an independent. It is an excellent tool.

 

It is a little slow in and out of Canada at the star right now. Which I don't blame landstar so much as prime minister deputy dufy. Things were pretty good right up til the new nafta was announced.

 

Deal isn't done until congress says it is. Interesting time line. Need 60 days to review. In the mean time the midterms will happen. (Tomorrow). He can claim a "yooge" win even though it isn't sealed yet. If they reject it he will blame congress. After the midterms where he hopes to continue to hold Congress, house of reps, and white house. Had the deal come earlier and Congress rejected it he would look like a failure. What a dog and pony show. Nevermind the deal is very similar to the old deal. Whatever.

I still won't buy American milk or milk products if I can help it, unless I am in America. I don't give a darn if it costs less than ours. Principle. My other buying practices will remain the same. But no milk. Or Heinz. (Rejected Heinz a long time ago when Buffett moved ketchup production out of Leamington on). So have tons of people in the area.

I tried to lease with Landstar a while ago. Be warned; their recruiters can be terribly burocratic and unreasonable. They work literally according to the book. I got stuck because i has 2 minor damages in 2014, with nobody else involved, when i was new to Canada, and 2 deer collisions not at fault. Kept insisting they wanted police and full insurance reports on everything- i told them that neither existed, and that i didn't want them to contact the carrier because i was still working for them. They kept rerpeating the same demand. Told them politely to bugger off.
And no, their rates are not good. I know people who run out of Canada for them, and thery have to take the usual ########- 1$ per mile- loads to get to a good load. And the fun of a free loadboard quickly evaporates when you find out that the good loads never make that board.
Where i work i have on average $13.000 per month after carrier costs and fuel- that seems to be roughly the medium for dry van here on the prairies. I don't care how others judge that; i know my costs, and that this gives me net decent money. Busy with another carrier, for reasons i don't want to mention here, and that $13.000 is what my inc. should earn per month minimum.
