It helps keep you legal - NO DOUBT

A computer program is more accurate than a human mind when it comes to storing and retrieving data.

ELD are designed to accurately account for your Hours of Service.

HOWEVER, On the down side, Drivers are still having trouble planning their loads and managing their time. But Truth be told, if you are still using paper logs....the Man is going to get you if you mess up!

Look at the SMS Safety ratings of Driver Fitness and Hours of Service on just about any company and you will see the Man is hitting drivers and carriers with everthing that in CSA book and then weighing the points x 3 so the punishment of a few violations can result in exceeding the limits of a company's policy for CSA scores.

Imagine....THIS......A Roadside Inspection by the Arizona State Police.

    Results include:
    SPEEDING over 15 mph....
    LOG Duty Status Not current....
    FLAT tire.....
    REQUIRED SAFETY LIGHT not functioning...
    VEHICLE annual DOT inspection expired...

This Drive just earned over 70 points on a level 3....wow! He had a difficult time getting hired after the company fired him...three years just for speeding before anyone will hire someone with Recklessness on their record.

So....my suggestion (from experience) Let the computer handle the log book and you can focus on safe driving and daily vehicle inspections reporting.

Otherwise, you could lose that job making 50 to 60 K and wind up making 10 dollars an hour standing in a guard shack!

    KABOOM!

    Paper forever. Until it's consumed.

The problem with ELD is that it's utterly preCISE in a world that will consider the Driver disposable.

The firings have to stop. Or the Industry has to improve on precision. Can you imagine stroke sensors by laser on each of the brake rods under the rig for example, some of which alert the driver to saying adjust me? Among a thousand other things that can get problems in inspection.

Maybe RFID will transmit a truck's 1000 different specs to a passing DOT man, he can pull over the one out of a whole herd of compliant trucks.

Electronic logs....paper logs....it makes no difference. The hours of service rules are the same. I am surprised that people still have conversations about Elogs almost a year after the mandate.

The one thing that sticks in my mind is a recent video probably from Lepton1 or Scottie67 showing a ELD clicking over to a new working day with 2 minutes remaining at local midnight to the previous day's remaining hours to drive while rolling down the interstate making miles and money.

I can imagine the time savings by not sitting in the desk at the sleeper doing paper work 2 hours a day. That was what I put my spouse to doing first week of her training while I drove solo. Once she learned paperwork, how the truck rode and generally absorbed the honeymoon so to speak around the USA she got right to work doing her team side of driving in training. But she took over the paperwork with the exception of paper logs for myself which I filled and signed. (Same as her own)

FFE had approximately 12 forms potentially to fill out on each load in addition to the usual macros for interchange and so on on the qualcomm. Eliminating paperwork and the associated lost time is a goal of mine.

HOWEVER. The ELD is way too precise for daily driving. Especially now if a DOT man can access the engine ECM and determine if you were crawling across a truckstop parking lot in gear while on your sleeper break.

Heck no...I am a trucker like many who hated the ELD, until I learned to use it to my benefit.

My only complaint about the ELD is it is unforgiving! It forces people to be honest and deal with reality as opposed to cheating on paper logs using forgery.

I have not yet heard an ligitimate argument as to why the ELD is doing anything other than what it was intended. It is a computer. It was programmed to record Hour of Service as regulated by the FMCSA. All Drivers are required to understand the truth and consequences for intentionally disregarding the DOT mandate to log any and every change of duty status concurrently.

My point being, why fight it, we as a group of individuals agreed to the rules and regulations when we applied to the State for the purchase of a CDL Class A Drivers license.
