No no I meant your first year of driving experience. And I mean I don't see why it matters. I was 21 when I started.Bubsaroni Thanks this.

Who was the girl that worked for Jim Palmer and made all the YouTube videos?
-
I've seen her mentioned around here a few times, haven't watched any videos yet. (laptop died on me, stuck browsing in my mobile!)
browsing around I think my best bet is definitely CC regardless of where I go, something about the company schools keeps rubbing my the wrong way.
does anyone have suggested / recommended companies? I'd prioritize West coast based, OTR Nationwide driving. off the top of my head, there seem to be more good things said than bad about Schneider, and currently they're at the top of my list. I talked to one of their "online live chat" guys, and apparently they've got open positions here near Walla Walla, which is great, as well as class reimbursement, which is great as well. according to their website, it seems like they also offer their own training, but I'm still more inclined to go the CC route.
are there any downsides to Schneider I should know about? anyplace better? there's always good and bad opinions about every place, it seems pretty subjective to each driver. just gotta get out there and start working, it would seem! -
Jim Palmer is a good place for some drivers. I would go there if I didn't know where to start and can get through the longish "riding with a trainer" period. They (and Prime) call it B Seat Driver. You & trainer do 30k or 40k miles. The school and very small class size is very good. Their health insurance, when I looked at it, was extremely expensive. I think it was $375/mo for a single. Your money went into an HSA, so it's always your money but it's not conventional medical insurance. That may have changed. Also, I don't like reefer freight. There are too many reasons for delays.
I always say picking a company is like getting shoes. It matters how they fit you. Nothing else is as important as the fitbvbwith you. Expensive shoes that don't fit you are not as good as cheap shoes that fit just right, even if other shoes fit me like a dream.
Jim Palmer & Prime are kind of picky so anything non-optimal in your work history or driving record MIGHT prevent you driving for them. Many other good companies will hire you as a newbie.Bubsaroni Thanks this. -
Allie Knight or something like that? Think she quit trucking.?Metallica88 Thanks this.

Hell, I'm 22 and started driving at 21. Had my license since I was 19. I started off with a mega carrier, worked there for 6 months and left for a smaller company with about 25 trucks. Never too young to start driving. Don't regret starting at all.Bubsaroni said: ↑hi, I'm a young guy looking for a new career. (I mistakenly wrote driver in the title, I'm not a driver yet. but I will be.) I've liked big trucks as long as I can remember and I'd like to finally get to drive one. I've started reading thru some threads on this forum, and I'm going to keep doing so for a good while here, but I'd also like to ask some questions if my own. (apologies if they've been asked/answered before! (they probably have and I just haven't found them yet))
I live in Walla Walla, WA, and I'm about to turn 23. should I be looking to get my CDL first, then apply to work somewhere, or should I go to a company that will train me themselves and then hire me? I seem to see more negative talk about the latter, though I haven't looked super far into it yet.
does anyone have a recommendation for a company in / near Walla Walla? I do not want to relocate if at all possible. do I have to live near a company to work for them?
what companies should I avoid? does anyone know anything about the quality of the CDL program at the Walla Walla community college? is there a better one anywhere nearby? I assume I have to get my CDL in the same state I'm licenced to drive in.
just in the but if research I've done so far, it looks like driving for ups might be a good choice, would I be able to get a job there being inexperienced as I am?
I would prefer to drive long distances than locally, at least most of the time.
I know about the long hours, cramped space, time away from family, "it's a lifestyle" and all, none of that is an issue for me. I've always wanted to be a truck driver!
lastly, for now, what do you wish you'd know it been told before you got into this line of work?Click to expand... -
Hello everyone is it worth buying a back massager for long trips?
I ask because my back is tired, and with a massager I'm afraid to fall asleep during ride, I heard a lot of such stories, is it true? Or advise your chooseLast edited by a moderator: Nov 15, 2018
