I know people that run 3408s on a regular basis, they are averaging over 5mpg consistently, most have updated their running gear and are running faster gear ratios.
Looked at this K100 a while back, it was set up with 3.70 rears from the factory but had a direct 9 speed behind it, so it would still carry quite a few rpms, 1750 rpm at 60mph isn't the best for fuel economy.
