Don't Do it (Part 6: Overcoming your limits)

    They make it look easy, don't they? Sign up for a school and they will find you a job that will agree to pay for the school. Can't get any easier than that, can it? And all you have to do is sit there and drive. Heck, if the dweeb in the pic can do it, you can too, right?

    What's the catch? There HAS to be a catch.

    When you do your research, you find out that the vast majority that get in cant cut it and are out within months. Sleep patterns, high stress, fear of the unknown, social life, depression are the usual culprits.

    "I saw some truck drivers...they were fat, smelly and 400lbs...if they can do it and not be smart enough to bathe, why can't I?"

    Don't do it.

    "Do what?"

    You are looking at the end result, not the beginning. You can pack on 100 lbs a year by eating wrong. 2 years ago, he was just like you. What happened to him? He stayed in when others like him, who were struggling got out. Is there a way to stay in the trucking industry without burning out, going insane or becoming extremely obese and depressed? Absolutely.

    First thing, get those stupid ideas of how easy it seems out of your head. You don't expect to go to a gym, work out, go to sleep and the next day be all ripped an muscular. You don't read a book and go to sleep and wake up expecting to be a cop or a chef or a lawyer or whatever. Get EASY out of your mind. Come back to reality.

    Things are going to be stressful. Things are going to be difficult. How do you deal with stress? That big boy we were talking about earlier, he's one of many that fell into the trap of feeding his face. That's his way of coping with stress. See, eating and drinking to cope, to get through, is a bad thing. Eating and drinking to reward yourself after a good day's work, is a good thing. Why are they different? A coping mechanism becomes a crutch, a support. Whatever problem you are having, if you use an external support, your built in internal support system becomes weaker. In other words, you will need more and more of it just to cope.
    If its a reward, you will not require more and more. See the difference? Same thing goes with things like coffee and cigarettes. I don't do coffee. I don't need it.

    "So how do you stay awake, Six?"

    When I was powerlifting, I realized that I had to do 3 things in order to be successful.
    1. First off, I had my workout planned the day before. Why does that matter? If you don't have your goal in mind ahead of time, it becomes much more difficult to not become distracted and lose focus of the goals for that day. You will not be able to bring that A Game to every game unless your mind is 100% into it, and the best way for me was to have my mind made up the day before.
    2. In the gym, before I got down and dirty and did a set, I'd meditate. Everyone else, is playing with their music. I don't need music. I wouldn't hear it anyway. I don't hear anything. Everything is blocked out. I see that iron. I see me lifting that iron. Once, it has been visualized, I will be successful.
    I see the truck. I see me in the truck. I see those miles. I see the destination. I will be successful. Focus until you can see your goal and then fire. You don't have to focus the whole trip (that's impossible anyway), you just have to see you attaining your goal.
    Lot's of you guys have fallen into the HABIT of constantly needing mental stimulation. Games, TV, music...etc and if you don't get it, your brain shuts down and you fall asleep at the wheel.
    3. You don't grow while you're in the gym lifting. The growth comes during sleep. This is called Recovery. Likewise, if you can focus the mind to a point to where you can blast past any limits that you may have had, you can also shut the mind down and go to sleep. Sleep is beautiful. It's what prevents you from getting stressed out and irritable and tired. It's what's going to keep you sane. Make it your HABIT to get 8-9 hours sleep.

    You didn’t lift to music?

    When I did it I’d usually try to put on some hammering heavy metal like old Megadeth or something to help as a bit of an adrenaline booster.

    I don't listen to music when lifting either. When I run races, its speed/power metal the entire time.
