Are there any strategies to reducing detention? Literally reaching for anything at this point. Thanks

I would say the same thing bill for detention time ! Or get a good rate per mile that covers the loading and unloading time plus driving time and still make a profit. I know it easy to say vs getting them to actually pay for detention. Having ELDs and a 14 hour day and 70 hour week. They should pay if they want a truck and driver sitting at the loading or unloading dock. Why should we sit for free today ? Our time is not unlimited anymore.

I try to make sure the freight rate covers any and all time tied up loading, unloading and drive time on that load.

I assume I will not be paid detention but when I do, it’s just an added bonus.

If you find yourself being held up without compensation multiple times per week, you either need to charge more for your time or find better customers.

He'll never get what's truly fair by raising the all-in rate to compensate. The average class 8 commercial truck runs about $100/hr. There's no way to determine how long you'll sit without giving away more "free" time. You really have to get an hourly detention rate put on the rate con before you even dispatch the truck.

That's the only way to hold the Shipper AND Receiver responsible for any delays. When they know they are being charged by the hour you won't be sitting for endless hours and even if you are at least you're generating the same revenue you would have gotten if they weren't detaining your equipment. Any other method and you'll be giving away free use of your truck/trailer AND losing even more via lost revenue opportunities from the lack of other loads.

    Don’t run general freight.

Add up all your detention time for a year, both paid and unpaid. Then figure what your truck could have been making during all those hours if it could have been out there on the road hauling something.
