so I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this but thought I’d check.
In the picture above is a trailer wheel seal, packed with grease. It’s seeping. Bad wheel seal right? My other 3 are bone dry. My abs light was on, moved and it went off. But after checking the pig tail for 12v, and testing good, I checked for wheel seal leaks. Found this. To bad this one is on the axle/side that was real close to being out of spec on the spindle. Spindle doctor came about a year and a half ago and said “looks good to me, probably got another year or two on it, no charge”...
So probably time to do the spindle this time regardless right? I mean the abs light went off, but I’m pretty sure that seal isn’t supposed to be the slightest bit wet right? Bad seal?
Quick wheel seal question...

Yeah. My local shop for wheel seals don’t measure for spindle wear. TA a while back said my spindle was bad, the local spindle doctor said It is was in spec, with a little more life in it. I just replaced this seal a year and a half ago. I’m thinking the spindle is gone by now give or take and is to risky to just to seal, then have to redo it?jamespmack and Rideandrepair Thank this.

TA says they when the wheel seals fail. I let loves do minejamespmack, Rideandrepair and HopeOverMope Thank this.

Just replace the seal? How many miles on the truck?
Someone really needs to try hard to mess up/bend a spindle like that.
Seals do go out for "no good reason". I wouldn't imediately assume it was caused from some orther wear/falure. At least it's not oil bath and leaked all over your break pads...jamespmack, x1Heavy, HopeOverMope and 1 other person Thank this. -
Put a Stemco seal with a wear ring. That will fix it.

I agree. They measured the wear pattern/groove @ TA a while back. Had to fight them to put the wheels back on because they said it was out of spec. Brought it home and the spindle doctor said the wear was fine. This same wheel failed a year and a half ago. It’s on a 99’ Fontaine, kind of hard to tell mileage. Might just be coincidenceLast edited: Nov 23, 2018

What makes this such a good fix compared to a regular wheel seal, if you don’t mind sharing some detail?
I think I used a stemco seal last time, don’t know about the wear ring though.jamespmack and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
Gives a nice new surface for seal to ride on also called 2 piece I believe. Otherwise clean real good. As pitting / rust causes seal to leak.If pitted wear ring fixes problem. Only time I had a spindle replaced was after bearing siezed up from faulty torque on front wheel seal job. Since have bought torque wrench and do steer seals myself.TA tries to pull that especially on steers. As long as inner race doesn’t spin easily on the spindle it should be fine.
