I was in the worst possible snow last week. 6" wet snow and pavement below slick ice and steep grades. Left transmission in auto and it performed excellent. Had to feather pedal numerous times when traction broke but regained footing each time.
The only place the auto is a PIA is off road because on short steep grades and hairpin turns you have to use manual mode which takes some getting used to.
Of my 4 million miles I got about 500,000 on auto
Currently a 2014 cascadia 13 speed. Earlier models were horrible, slow shifting. Whatever POS auto was in the 2012 Prostar you kept the wrecker on speed dial.

Double clutching his company policy my new employer.

Also the last outfit I drove, I drove an 18-speed and they said the same thing don't ever use that clutch except for starting out and you know every single one of their trucks wouldn't stay in 3rd gear and 7th Gear that hole was a joke it just wouldn't stay in. The transmissions were all trashed and gee I can't figure out why.

    8% 3 mile?

That's a 6 mile grade in my time but who is picky. Me.

What am I missing? Im not familiar with the escape ramp. Either that or too much time has passed.

It's on US 322 between State College and Milroy PA. I was going by what the sign says 8% for 3 miles. It could be longer then 3 miles. I know at the bottom or when the truck restriction speen limit ends, their still is more to the actual bottom. Their is a big dam the road goes around for the 8% Their is a hill called 3 Mile Hill in PA I don't now if that something different.

No it's ok. I am wrestling with the effects of old age. You would think I know that mountain well after having been trained on it without a speck of jakebrake anything in this cold and cruel world in winter no less.

I'm just baffled at how many old timers are willing to accept the Autos. I'm not a very egotistical person but I admit it would slightly affect it. Other ways of computer technology have already ruined the industry. Real trucks are manuals - end of story.

I don't know if it's a matter of accepting or not. It's the way things are going and, like it or not, everybody has to adjust. I didn't say anybody had to like it but we better get used to the idea that technology advances.
And, for what it's worth, I'm an old timer. Our company will switch to automatics when there aren't any more stick transmissions anywhere to be found.
LOL...we still have some trucks with two sticks.

Oh I agree with ya all the way. My trucking motto has always been go with the flow. Basically hope for the best expect the worst. I'll have to apply to to the future trucks I guess. Now for the twins...that's a skill and a half.

If your company leaves ALL the features unmolested, they are not bad. But too many companies program out the manual mode, the "performance" mode, or both.
