I’m assuming the brownie is on the right. I’d put that in the 1st hole and run out the gears on the main before throwing it into the second and repeating the process...

Anything @Oxbow is trying to explain is just gonna make my head hurt even more

 

To further complicate things, I think @Rontonio has a 4 speed auxiliary behind his 18 speed. I believe that he likely uses it primarily for greater overall reduction when starting his heavy loads in soft conditions or hills. I would venture to guess that he doesn't use the overdrive in the brownie much when loaded. In his situation he will have overlap in nearly every gear. In other words 3rd in the 18 speed and direct in the brownie probably produces a higher speed then 4th in the 18 and 1st in the brownie.

I think @catalinaflyer may have some suggestions for how to keep your heating costs down...

 

You could do that, but you would get a rude awakening trying to put the main back in first after going all the way through the gears. You could however go all the way through your main box with the brownie in first, then shift just the brownie to 2nd, 3rd, and then 4th.
I'll bet @truckdad can explain it better than I have. I guess my biggest point is that you don't have to always use the same exact progression.

This one had a 5 & 4, both overs. Typically I'd only use 1-4 on the main and 1 & 3 on the brownie. With a 380 Cummins she didn't have enough to ever run both in over unless I was empty. But when I was empty she'd fly.

That old 4 spring aluminum frame truck is still running around Wichita, KS pulling an end dump. Guy who bought her said he had to put a 13 spd in her because he couldn't find anyone to drive a 2 stick. I tried to buy it back a few years ago, he said that truck makes him more money than any other one he owns so he would sell it, at a "price".

 

Ah, the not so "good old days with bingo stickers, separate plate for Oregon, and fuel permits for each state. I don't miss that part of those days.
