Another funny thing, a lot of the managers have gone out and bought their own trucks and leased them on to other companies. I know of 3 who have done this. It would be a conflict of interest to lease on to the company they also manage, so they did not do that. BUT the fact they have got their own trucks leased on to other companies speaks volumes. The top management at the company must be considering leaving the oilfield if they are willing to let their managers provide hauling capacity for their competitors!

I would consider that also to be a conflict of interest.......

I just bought my first truck, and was looking to chase the oil field dream a lot of what you have said I am slowly learning to be true the closer I get to leasing on my truck. What i have found is, that there are little to no job positions for winch truck O/O's. So i set my sites on crude oil, but my lack of liquid bulk experience (LIQUID being the key word) has narrowed it down to one company, Gibson. So now Im looking at pulling the winch off and installing the wet kit, because Im out of time and money and if you want to install a direct mount pump on the 6 bolt passenger side for an FRO trans, you best have an abundance of both. The growing pains are real and i'm still anxious to find out what I don't know yet.

Hey you just need to get on with someone for about 3-6 months and then more doors will open.

And I feel your pain on the time and money. My truck will only have worked 9 days out of a possible 30 days of November. Part of the issue was I leased onto a new carrier so you have downtime with the transition. BUT, the big issue I have is anytime I put my truck in the shop it stays off the road a minimum of 7 days. This time was 11 days out of service mainly because no work was done over the Thanksgiving weekend!

I appreciate you posting your brass tax.
Gibson wants me to purchase my own testing/sampling equipment for around 2-3k.
    Is that standard practice?
Where is a good place to by this equipment?
How do I know what I need?
What can i expect to spend$?

There is a lot of used testing / sampling kits out there if you have time to look. Maybe some of the Facebook groups.

L-K is out of Huston they have their centrifuge on sale for $1900. A Robinson centrifuge is $2300. Hydrometers are $100ish with a case locally. I've bought several graduated cylinder. Here in Midland. A good box mounted on the truck should be around $800ish.
I'm in the same boat. I got a truck that I want to put to work .

Most of the leases I work you can't drop a thief down the hatch because of H2s. Pull a sample at the truck and spin it.

Read the reviews on the company your thinking of leasing with. There financial situation has changed recently. They have been cut loose as too much of a liability by their parent company.
Their recruiters hassled me to come work for them, so I did some digging.
