99-Cent Bill Would Have Cost Couple Hundreds

INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis couple were told they would have to pay a nearly $600 utility bill after they sent in a payment for a 99-cent bill a month late.

Carolynn and Richard Sprague were signed up for Citizens Gas budget billing, paying a flat $90 every month in an effort to avoid high winter heating bills, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported.

"Our gas bills were $300 the first couple of months, and although it was only for the first couple of months, it's still quite a bit," Carolynn Sprague said. "So it made more sense to us to pay $90 year-round instead of $400 bills."

This happened to me, though nothing was late. Those average bills bite you in the butt. You don't get any breaks on what you actually owe at the end of the year.

I got a nice $1100 or shut off notice after a year. Apparently they had figured my first pro-rated bill of 6 days into the monthly averages.
