2016 Volvo VNL780, D13, i-Shift, 268K miles.
Took the truck to the dealer because transmission was suffering from some rough shifts. They are saying that the driver was using gas pedal instead of the brakes to hold the truck in place, therefore the warranty may not cover the repairs. Has anyone ever heard something like this? I asked for the actual codes, haven't gotten them yet. But this is what the request for authorization to remove the transmission for further inspection says:
C/S THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT HARD FROM 6TH TO 7TH AND SHAKES WHEN DOWN SHIFTING FROM 12TH TO 11TH, C/A. Cause: BROUGHT TRUCK INTO SHOP AND CONNECTED TECH TOOL AND FOUND CODE FOR BRAKE PEDAL STATUS AND CLUTCH PLATE LOAD WHICH INDICATES THROTTLE IS BEING USED TO HOLD TRUCK INTO PLACE INSTEAD OF PRESSING ON BRAKE. PERFORMED GEAR ENGAGEMENT TEST AND FOUND TEST FAILED AND RESPONSE WAS NOT NORMAL. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO REMOVE AND INSPECT TRANSMISSION INTERNALS.
Honestly, sounds like a bunch of BS. If they refuse to cover under warranty, I am screwed bigtime!
UPDATE: Got the codes from the diagnostic report:
Active Transmission Brake Switch Status - Unexpected Operation P105594 Count:121
Inactive Transmission Clutch Plate Load - Actuator Slipping P106074 Count: 88
Inactive Transmission Clutch System - Unexpected Operation P107594 Count: 6
PLEASE HELP!

Sounds like it would be a new clutch. An expensive clutch but the transmission would still be good. Detroit D12 auto shift has a warning on dash if you get the clutch hot, say from not using the brakes. Maybe someone know more about the ishift transmissions
Silver Bear Thanks this. -
I would ask for the histogram if possible. Not sure if Volvo uses it or not though. Histograms will typically record the number of occurences of certain conditions over the entire life of the component.
And yes it is possible for a driver to burn up a clutch by slipping it to try and hill hold. Not sure about the I-Shift specifically but most automatics are just manuals that have been automated. There are no torque convertors, just clutches.Silver Bear and magoo68 Thank this. -
One guy where I work burnt a clutch in 2 weeks they covered it . Then he burnt another it turns out he was leaving it in gear when parked sometimes .. he paid for second clutch and had gone 4 years or so now problem free after they explained proper way to drive it

That would definitely mess up the clutch but wouldn't cause hard shifting in the transmission.

magoo68 Thanks this.

But if that is indeed the problem then that would be abuse no?
I don't know enough other than to think well, sometimes you gotta brake at 70 mph and 12th gear or wherever dontcha? -
Does volvo have a clutch overheat abuse light ?? If so it should register events I’d think ..
