I got the head off my 3406. Definitely burned through couple questions: it was blown between 5-6. Would that cause significant blow by? Second question. Where would yall recommend to get parts from? Board sponsor maybe? Someone reasonable and trustworthy?

Go to the PAI parts catalog and find the part numbers:
PAI Industries, Inc. - Catalog
You have to set up an account, it's free. The catalog has the OEM numbers and the PAI replacement. Once you have the PAI numbers go to this place:
Welcome to Premium Truck Parts - Premium Truck Parts is your online source of Genuine Volvo, Mack, Hino and Fuso parts as well as an aftermarket source for Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Peterbilt and GMC
Their website isn't the best so you need to make sure you have the part numbers right. I got all the gaskets and seals to redo the top end of my Cummins from them, Much cheaper than the dealer and everything I got from them looks well made -
By suggestions from several very knowledgeable folks on this site, I went with IPD. No complaints.
SAR Thanks this. -
I get my parts from parts.cat.com
Once you sign up and get a user name, you type in part number and it pops up. You can check all local cat dealers closest to you and shows you inventory so you know you get the parts. 2nd day shipping only cost 10 bucks. I buy parts all the time to keep my cat oil leak free and running good. How do I get part numbers? I bought my cat motor parts cd off amazon for like 50 bucks. It’s like 400 pages long and has the whole motor broken down with every part number for each part and even the different bolts. Search ebay for 3406 parts manual or check amazon.
I recently bought a new injector harness off cat parts. Thought it would be discontinued. But it wasn’t. People were on eBay selling new old stock for 100 bucks more than what cat parts sells it for brand new on ebay. Just FYIOxbow Thanks this. -
Darn, been looking for a box of Cat fur, paws, whiskers and a meow to go with the rest of the kitty.

a blown head gasket or cracked liner flange typical causes the cooling system to pressurize and the combustion gasses push coolant out the radiator over flow hose. 95% of the time in a Cat 3406E C15 C 16 C15 ACERT if the head gasket is blown its because the material under the liner flange has fretted away REGARDLESS of how the liner protrusion measures up. it will likely need counterbores cut and shims fitted to correct this.
Blow by typically is caused by a pressure source, not a blown head gasket. excessively worn valve guides, broken piston rings or scored liner/piston skirt can all cause blow by. a hole in the piston of the air compressor can also do it as the compressor crank case breather is directly joined to the engine crank case. I have also seen a failed turbo seal cause boost to enter the oil drain tube and pressurize the crankcase under boost on a C16 genuine turbo.
I would be looking further into the cause of your blow by.
I personally use an IPD steel one piece DLC coated piston, SDP cat rings (3064014, 3064016, 3104188) and a cat liner in my rebuilds. I seen to have had a good run thus far.A5¢ Thanks this. -
A few folks I've talked to say CAT quality isn't what it used to be. Few guys I've talked to use IPD parts now.
@superhauler @SmokinCAT any advice? You 2 seem to be pretty well versed in this sort of thing.
