You're correct. He's a slacker. The disturbing thing is the part about the wife house shopping. This fool is in training, and the money he hasn't even begun to earn is already burning a hole in the pockets?

My money is on him washing out in less than 6 months.

$5000 bill for driving school. A wife who’s looking at houses. I mean WTF else do you need for motivation?

I figure there’s a teachable moment. Just never met someone like this and as I blinked into the abyss of lazy I expected, like in a movie, that there’s a coach who could get him psyched.

I thought maybe my buddy should refuse to drive as well and see who lasts longer. Hahahahaha

Yup. I think even 6 months is a bit too long. I was going to say 60-90 days. Once the checks look like working at McDonald’s he’ll be gone.

He wouldn't last 2 weeks at McDonald's. My bet is, he will try to get injured somehow and sue. Or say that your friend hurt his feelings or bullied him.

Tell your friend to proceed with caution.

So the trainee, not the trainer, is running the show? :)

Sounds like the trainee needs some expectations set out.

Also sounds like a waste of time. :|

I would as gently as possible explain to him that someone is going to be crawling in bed with his old lady if he doesn't pick up the pace. She doesn't want a 200.00 dollar paycheck and that's what he is getting ready to send home. Sometimes things have to be spelled out blunt as it may be.
Of course I'm not or ever will be a trainer and there is probably a good reason why.

Holy ####. I didn’t think of that. I called him as soon as I read this to give him a heads up.

Also if the trainer has repeatedly tried to talk about this issue with the student and nothing is changing, take the next step and mention his concerns to the training dept and/or his fleet team aNd have them address the situation.

    Take trainee aside.

Ask: "You sick?!" If no then ask why you sitting there in bunk 14 hours wasting the Nation's Economic time? Yes wasting the Nation's treasure, money, time and effort getting that load delivered? What is the malfunction?

I literally cannot remember the last time I did 14 hours sleeping, that's reserved for healing in a hospital bed or some sort which does not happen too often. I get well along on 5 hours each night. Sometimes I don't know what to do with the day and half the night hours, but I don't sleep it away if I can help it provided it is a good day to do something fun.

You are not going to keep a trucking job long sleeping 14 hours. You literally lose value as a team, student etc. Essentially GTFO of my truck, I'll find a gal or someone who will run with me. We will make a game of it. But when it's time to sleep it's time to rest, not one minute longer than necessary. Then chores and meals prior to running 11 hours.

If you cannot motivate that slug a bed now then kick him or her out. Before he goes out there and gets major late and wastes everyone's time. Especially dispatch.

Maybe his blood sugar is low. The good is he is using bathroom facilities and does not smoke. Not in a hurry so not accident waiting to happen. Let trainee figure it out himself. Have you met the wife? Maybe not in a hurry to get home:D
