If i leave my truck in a terminal in chicago for 15 days in January while I'm travelling will my batteries freeze and die out?? I'm from Florida we don't have these problems at home and I'm afraid of finding a dead truck when i get back.
Freezing temps, leaving truck for 15 days, will batteries die?

. Batteries should be ok just shut off all power. 15 days is not long but depending on how cold it is could be very tough starting, may need boost. Ideally out fit truck with trickle charger and block heater if plug in available
BUMBACLADWAR and Alexander suero Thank this. -
Plop a solar panel up top, duct tape down somewhere and trickle the thing.
Hopefully you stay ahead of the battery set.
Usually a big truck that is off and dead will sleep pretty durn good. One compromise is to take the batteries off and place them inside the warm shop.BUMBACLADWAR, REO6205, blairandgretchen and 1 other person Thank this. -
These can be found online and some local battery stores and work well on the dash of a south facing vehicle
If the battery gets low on charge (dead) and the temp goes below about +5 degrees Fahrenheit your batteries will “freeze” and crack. Today’s vehicles have a lot of parasitic discharge. Or you could disconnect the batteries and leave them in the shop if they won’t go walking

I use a similar charger in my Tahoe that stays parked outside in Fargo. Always starts right up after months and in the dead of winter.Last edited: Dec 9, 2018
x1Heavy and Alexander suero Thank this. -
When I lived in Maine I just hit the main disconnect switch so my batteries wouldn’t be draining by elog, radio, etc. Then I just tossed a moving blanket over batteries, under battery cover. Would fire right up after 4 weeks sitting every December.

They will die when you go back down to FL.

Very helpful. Sounds like i need a solar charger to be safe. To the store i go thanks .. everyone!

Do you have a block heater? If so can you get it plugged in?
The block heater will make it much easier to start, which means you will need less cranking power from the batteries. -
Lead acid Batteries have a freeze point of -65. Fully charged.
A dead battery would be all water. Which is a freeze point of +32.
It depends on the conditions of the battery, age factor, and charge factor.
The batteries themselves with no electrical connection should be allright if in great shape. So if you got a switch. Turn it off. Because the ecm, radio, and whatever, have a very slight draw for their memory banks.Alexander suero Thanks this.
