What are you guys opinions and experiences with trading in equipment that isn't paid off? I have a 2012 Peterbilt 587 with 667,400 miles on it. Old Warner truck. Still owe $18,000

like anything else, they will tack on that money owed, to the new truck you buy...they ain't gonna eat it.

    you do.

best thing to do is, keep it running, pay it off. resale/trade value will be lower by then, and there won't be much for a trade in, but at least, you don't get to keep paying that $18,000 on top of the new truck.

you could always sell it privately to someone that maybe perhaps hauls containers, especially IF there is any sort of container yard with in a radius of where you are.

or a garbage transfer yard, anyone really, just needed a stand-by truck, or a first time buyer..

many people will buy a GOOD used truck, but the dealerships will highly penalize you for any monies owed...

keep it as clean as you can, make sure it can pass a DOT inspection (maybe get one before you sell it), maybe change out the important fluids and filters, maybe even get an oil analysis, make any MINOR repairs as you can without breaking YOUR budget for either a new truck, or a used(new to you) truck...

all that can (and most likely will) get that truck sold faster, along with any maintenance logs as well.

Thank you very much for the helpful information. But here's the KICKER... I've made some hefty repairs to this truck this year, so I only have about $5000 saved up. If I sell this truck privately then I don't have a truck. I was hoping miraculously the $18,000 would disappear:D:D and I'd just go swap this one out for something without emissions. Reliable older truck. I don't know many places where $5,000 is a reasonable down payment for another truck. Except Arrow Truck Sales. But that's where I got this one, and 99% of the vehicles on their lot have emissions. I'm tryna stay clear if emissions.

i understand, but the $18,000 has to either be paid off, or added onto the other purchase....

    sorry.......

How much money will they give you for trade in on your current truck? Is it over 18k?

Do they have any new ones available? It sounds like new production is bought up for 5 months.

just sell the truck for what you owe, take the repairs at a loss.

At this point the truck should have been paid off.

Go to a few dealers and ask them what they will give you for a trade before you even look at anything on the lot.

You may find one that gives you what you want or at least comes close. Otherwise you have to hang onto it until you pay it down.
