Hey guys. I just got a load that I have to take from the Dallas area to Clarksburg, WV. I've mapped it out a few different ways and it looks like I'll have to go through Kentucky. My brother has always told me to avoid the state because they're a little more enthusiastic about pulling you in for inspections and finding small violations for revenue.
Anyway, since I'll be running I-30, there are a few different ways I can go. I was just wondering if there was a scale or two in particular that seem to be troublesome. I've gone south through the state often enough out of Cinncinnati and not had issues, but never come up from the south. Any input?

I guess you're aware KY isn't a Prepass state . They use Norpass . I think TN is tougher than KY . There's a TN scale on I-65 just before you get in KY and a KY sca;le about the 4 mm on I-65 . KY doesn't inspect that many trucks .
-
I don't use Prepass. It's funny, I drive the length of TN all the time and am usually shocked if any of the I-40 scales are open!
-
There's only one scale that you'll find open west of Nashville, and that's in Brownsville, TN around the 45 or 50 mm. East of Nashville on I40, you can bet the farm that at least one of the scales just outside of Knoxville after the Flying J will be open.
As far as KY goes, I've traveled through there many many times over the past 6 years and have yet to be inspected in any fashion there.

He mentioned KY from the south so he may be taking I-65 North then the Bluegrass Parkway over to I-64 East into W. VA

What is it your trying to hide? Logbook, infractions, mechanical issues? Just go, and be happy
-
You're right, Rick, but he also mentioned that he never saw scales open on I-40. The one on 65 near the KY line is almost always open as well.

That was one way I was considering, along with even going up I-55 and cutting over to the US-51.

My main issue is that the trailers we pull are older than most, and while we drivers do our best to keep them up to spec, they also get pulled to Mexico and back and tend to get abused. The occasional non-vital yet non-fuctioning light, ground wire, or marginal recapped tire doesn't always get fixed until we get some free time to do it.
Just the kinds of things that aren't always an issue, but can still get you pulled in and dinged for by states that like to pull that junk instead of looking for real safety problems.
Anyway, my bro seems to have a personal issue with Kentucky. Maybe he was pulled in and given a laundry list of crap to deal with and has just avoided it out of spite, but his advice is usually spot on. So since I need to run the state, I was looking for the pickiest scales in the state. -
When I was with PAM, I used to run TX to OH a lot. The best way to go to WV in my opinion would be 30, to 40, to 65, to the Bluegrass Pkwy in Elizabethtown, then over to I-64 in Lexington.
