After 30 vacation days a year and off on weekends maint down time
Id say 60k on the low end 70k-80k avg and 100k on the high end after taxes. with your own truck trailer authority not a lease purchase company guy. 100k would be specialized type equipment not a dry van ref or plain skateboard.
You can make this kinda money driving for a walmart ups or ltl company also and be home alot more trucking doesnt pay what it should. Id say even with a drive van an otr independent shouldnt make less that 80k after tax for all the time spent away from family its complete ########. Ups drivers driving 20 foot box vans pull $33hr. Brokers should be kept to 10% profit margin by law this #### is outta control drivers making $1.65 for all miles is bs it cost .80 cents a mile to keep the truck moving thats not including truck payments insurance authority cost
Dont buy a truck you wanna do something for your neighbor start a brokerage and only charge 5 to 10 percent on every load with a guarantee. if there were enough of those brokerages wed only go to them and put the rest of the low lifes outta business
You want the big buck find good drivers good customers amd buy 5-20 trucks theres money to be made but your not going to get rich from one truckBuck73 Thanks this. -

Opinion bump.
I love the cpm vs % arguement.
% vs cpm can be the same number and most often is the same number. The same exact number !!!
And yes i know this is an old thread, humor me...
Cpm is an expression of average income to the truck. Some prefer to here a bigger number loaded or out bound %, and then put up with a lower empty cpm or lower % backhaul run.
These are all designed and used to confuse the driver, lease operator, and owner i got my own authority operators.
Its simply more convenient for different folks to plug money into their equations one way or another, though few express fuel as a % of load vs the actual dollars posted at the pump.
Some drivers do better than others company wise and business wise.
Some are lucky and dont have a crank go bad on late oil changes and others have bearings spin with ontime oil changes and good samples.
In that vein, i dont like the liability of owning the truck. One guy operation, making 10k a year more than me sounds good until he has an accident deemed partially his fault by a jury and his partial is $15 million dollars and your insurance covers only $12 million.
While you are claiming bankruptcy their attorney is busy piercing the corporate veil and he doesnt care if the house is in your wife's name... or the brother in law's...
Not that i wouldnt take the chance if i felt adequately compensated.
I am just saying, i sleep much better as a company driver than i ever did while i was in business. And that business paid a hell of a lot more than trucking... but it was stressful.
I dont like stress. Where i work pays good. Not fantastic! Sorry guys (it does pay upper tier money), i just reserve "fantastic" for wages that are so good, i only drive in good weather. Not in the snow and ice, but also not on too nice of days because i am out on the lake those days.
Nope... dont know anybody making cardiologist wages driving a truck.
I am home most weekends, home most nights, get most holidays off, have 3 weeks pd vacation, good pay and a nice bonus program 5 times a year. Its sweetpants trucking...
And i am always looking for more... then i wonder what you guys are doing? Gone a week or 2 or 6... then 3-6 days off...?
Omg... no... not for any company or my own would i be gone 2 weeks. Not happening.
If you do that for yourselves and your families, my hats off to you but not me.
And i keep coming back to... i can buy a truck for $150k hope nothing goes wrong... and build equity... via 6 years later my junk might sell for 40-50k.
Hmmm.... or i could just stuff that 15ok in my 401k and its worth the same or even more. whatever works for you... -
Some drivers need a security blanket, others don't.

I need to stay o/o not to go nuts. Even if I make less than a company driver, still my health is more important.
