I run 2 Galaxies. A 99 that I bought in the early 90s for pilot cars and a 98VHP for the highway.

Before this 2 radio setup, I ran a 23 channel Midland for the pilot cars and the Galaxy 44 for highway.

You can see my barracks room window during the volleyball game. Not me, just the window. The Navy let the studio bring in the sand to build the volleyball court and in their infinite wisdom made them scoop it up and take it back off the base after the scene was filmed.
I was still assigned to the USS Ranger while they were starting the filming and went to Miramar for my shore duty shortly after that. They shot some ( most or probably all ) the Ready Room scenes on the Ranger because the Enterprise was unavailable. Even though they act like it's all done on Enterprise.
The scene from the Star Trek movie where Chekhov is asking " Where are the nuclear wessels ? " then runs and jumps off the aircraft elevator is also the Ranger even though it acts like it's the Enterprise. Filmed very close to the same time frame.
The E-2C landing at dusk on Enterprise in Red October is from my squadron before I got there.

F-14's at full afterburner cat shots at night with the fire bouncing off the JBD's ( big chunks of the flight deck raised by hydraulic lifts called Jet Blast Deflectors ) is fairly impressive.
Another thing that you will remember is seeing/hearing/feeling is a F-14 going supersonic about 100 feet away from you standing outside. They caught me by surprise once when I was in my shop and scared the liver out of me. Boom is kinda loud.

I think it just looks that way in the pic. Standing in front of it it looks normal.

As far as radios go, I’m of a mind that you can’t beat a good old Cobra 29 for a decent sounding, reliable rig. Buy a GOOD mic, and it’ll sound good.

Galaxy makes a fine radio, as does Connex, Stryker, Magnum, and the rest of the “export” crowd. Most of them have the same chassis, just sprinkle a few different features around to suit individual tastes.

Some radios have more power than others, but you’ll pay for it. I’ve always favored a low powered radio and a separate box for power. Lotta times a bunch of us get parked on location real close. Too much power and it distorts at close range, can’t tell what each other is sayin. I can flip a switch and I’m back to low power.

Tell ya what makes a nice sounding rig that gets out well and won’t break the bank: catcha 29 on sale for under a hundred bucks, order a Ranger SRA-198 mic or a Astatic 636L mic. Either one can be had on EBay for around $25 bucks shipped. While you’re on there, order a RM KL-200 amp for less than $100. That’s a reliable, relatively cheap setup that’s easy to install and sounds good, and with a good antenna it’ll get out real nice. Good for about 100 watts all day long.
