“What’s the weather like on 4th of July and Lookout? Have you been that way?”

When all I’ve commented on was enforcement, and not weather conditions, and you lead in with a vague, incomplete question, you’re not leaving me enough information to interpret what you’re asking. I’m sorry I couldn’t understand your question, you gave me no context to work with. A miscommunication. So yes, spelling it out always helps to avoid these kinds of situations.

Montana and Idaho aren’t mandatory carry states.

They should have been doing it all along.

It's tough to get going when stopped because ignorant yahoos can't chain up. And spin out. Shutting the road down.

But in 44 years of gear jamming i’ve never thrown a set of irons. I’ve seen some gnarly snow storms, but never had to throw chains. Chains are for sissies, you weak company drivers. Tell your bosses to stop being cheap and buy you good winter tires. Grow a pair, man up, and drive that truck up that mountain.

Oh wait, this isn’t the counter at the Iron Skillet.

The real problem are the car spin outs that cause everyone to stop and then it’s hard to get moving again to make it over the pass! They really need to crack down on the cars also!!!!

    JReding Thanks this.

And.... I’ve been caught almost to the top when the chain light wasn’t on when I started at the bottom! So, it does happen that you’ve already started up before they turn the chain law light on...

Really? It seems like they are going out of their way to give you a heads up, as well as potentially save you from a $2,000 tow bill plus damages and lost revenue.

But let’s be honest. I’m pretty sure many who don’t make it up and over when it’s bad, left the base with chains ON. A mile or so later, half are flung off due to poor technique, excess speed, damaged chains, incorrect chains, or any combination of these.

Carry spares? Yes but stopping half way up to put another on is more dangerous than taking your chances and continuing

Wont do any good. California has been "SCREENING" trucks at Applegate, Ca. and in Verdi on the Nevada side as long as I can remember. Yet every snow storm there are countless drivers who proceed all the way to the "chains required camper truck" and just park there and go to sleep blocking everybody else who is trying to install chains. What they should do is start writing $1000 parking tickets to all those A-HOLES.
